Just saw ad for new BSG season starting Oct. 6 on Sci-Fi channel. Looks like being stuck on planet wasn't just someones bad dream as I had hoped.
Bob DeWoody

I'm suprised you guys have only just got the second half of the season on DVD, I had the complete season for weeks. Mind you we probably won't get season 3 on tv for months after you do.

"All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. NBC (?) was looking to capitalize on the SF craze that Star Wars had sparked. Give 'em the same thing in a different package and bam! It sells.

In reply to:

The writing addresses political complexities, theological issues, and sociological repercussions in a complex and refreshing way. The special effects are very good if not excellent. I highly recommend that you get the DVD's and enjoy. This show has the makings of a classic. It's probably better than Babylon 5.

I like. I watched it. I will watch it.

...But it could be so much better.

For instance: they have jump drives but their fighters still use chemical thrusters? What gives?

...They built the cylons (in the same vein that we built the terminator... Hmm...), but suddenly, after a war, we give up on AI? What about developing faster, better-controlled AI so we can send bots to fight bots? Haven't they heard of encryption?

Mere precedent is a dangerous source of authority.

-Andrew Jackson (1767-1845)

In my book the jury is still out on whether this is better than Babylon 5. B5 is still my all time favorite Space Sci-Fi series, even though they did wrap it up a little too fast in the end.
Bob DeWoody

I pretty much agree with you spacefire, the original was much better, but I still watch this one , I pretty much have to think of it as a completely different show. I mostly watch out of curiousity , and think it has slowly gotten better. I've never liked or understood this need to be 'friends' with the bad guys as they like to do in this show. There was no need for the new Starbuck and Boomer to be women, and of course starbuck is 10x better than anyone else because she is a woman. (insert saurcasm here) Also, Apollo is a total wimp. Ever notice that shows with strong female leads have to have a wimpy male character to make them seem more believable? I dont care for the cylons as humans idea, and dont see the need for it. Yes, it pretty much is a soap opera, you miss one ep and you don't know what the hell is going on. I liked the way the ships in the old series used to 'whoosh' around, even though it isn't as realistic (nor the uniforms they wore) it made it more exciting in my opinion.

So are you saying that we are indeed more sophisticated than our forebears in the 70's?

I would largely concur, with the exception of music which has infact taken a definite turn for the worse!
I watched the new episode Friday night and again last night. This show is getting way to dark for my taste. It's probably just me but the show is getting less and less entertaining. It's like watching a documentary about Nazi Germany, educational yes, entertaining no. I hope they lighten up a little in future episodes.
Bob DeWoody

well...the show has always been a bit dark. It's trying to cast such a desperate situation in a more "realistic" light than the original.

I do hope they ease up a bit though, just like you said.

--------------------SaiphMOD@gmail.com -------------------

"This is my Timey Wimey Detector. Goes "bing" when there's stuff. It also fries eggs at 30 paces, wether you want it to or not actually. I've learned to stay away from hens: It's not pretty when they blow" -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Nothing wrong with "dark" -- as long as the story progresses.

OTOH, dark for the sake of dark is gratuitous drama mongering... and probably not beyond TV producers that have a Peabody under their belt and see audience numbers growing beyond the core SF demographic. Audience = ratings = money.

There are plenty of producers that may actually be cylons...

Mere precedent is a dangerous source of authority.

-Andrew Jackson (1767-1845)
