I must admit, that previous picture looks positively volcanic in origin. Very interesting...

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

yeah, these pics coming down the line here are never a dull moment. i am awed by not only the beauty of the landscapes over and over again, but the continual discovery of newer and diverse stuff. these hairy rocks are just begging to be taken back to a lab by human hands. they indeed look absolutely volcanic.

some of these rocks look frighteningly recent on the surface --some looking out of place on the sand. as if plopped down there from somewhere else.

Someone needs to get to work on the new Spirit pics! Especially all those micro images of the Martian "coral".

They are very alien-looking.

I wonder if coral should even be in quotes.

"Coral" ? I see evidence of past volcanism; way past by the looks of the erosion. Does coral even fossilize? I think coral is calcimine and breaks down to powder when exposed, but I am not sure. Furthermore, there is no evidence of calcimine of organic origin, on Mars yet.

I am not sure I am utilizing the right terminology, so do the research. I have seen chalky calcimine like stuff, but I don't know if it is the right stuff. If you are looking for fossils, your best bet would be, shellfish, e.g. (Muscles, Clams, Luncheons, etc.), because those life-forms are primitive precursors. Vegetation, (Tree trunks, leaves, etc.) are more evolved.

A "coral" from Spirit, Sol 735 (L4, L5 & L6 filters):

-------------------------------------------------------------------

"I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical. Unsuccessful rebellions, indeed, generally establish the encroachments on the rights of the people which have produced them. An observation of this truth should render honest republican governors so mild in their punishment of rebellions as not to discourage them too much. It is a medicine necessary for the sound health of government."

Thomas Jefferson

yes it does.

it seems we've just gotten to mars and missed the fireworks show

Why, do you think that is fresh stuff? It's not smoking.

well, i'm talking fresh in terms of only a few MY, if not only 1 to 10 MY --a nearly non-existent timeframe. we've 'just missed it.' i say this because the rocks are not integral to the surrounding terrain --they are recently ejected there, ie, out of place. interlopers. fresh. new. don't belong there.

What about an image such as this... Also, can you reliably colorize micro images like these?

What do you see when you look at this? What does it tell you about the rock?

(I ask cuz I'm curious, not because I'm implying anything.)

to me it means a lot of air pockets were present in it's formation.

that flat spot on top of the rock. it looks as if the rock is presently sitting upside down somehow. kinda maybe.

the flat spot may have been at the bottom of the rock as it cooled, and was somehow tumbled over later. dunno. only extremely guessing.

or when it was still hot, someone came by with a trowel or shovel and slapped the top really hard to flatten it out.

Are those fossilized tire tracks, or what? Weird!?!? My bet is hydrothermal vent, but I am not 100% sure ...
