It looks like rocks. Really, this is absurd. There are more important scientific & geological
conclusions to be drawn from the study of these photos than to compare them to ficititious things.

Let's get serious. What's the composition of the rocks? ARe they igneous as almost all rocks on
Mars are, or what?

Those are the important questions and points to find out.

Sorry I took a momentary vacation from reality. I was thinking maybe at one time they were
ingenious rocks. We post these images for the fun of it and sometimes to get our 2 cents in.
The intent of posting these images is to let other people see what we have been seeing
and to oppen the minds of others.

You decide what is real and what is an illusion.

What do you think of this close-up of Spirits most recent drilling fragments magnified 2.5 times.

8-16-4-close-up-2M145631011

Ron Bennett

It looks like rocks. Really, this is absurd.

Uh. Imagine that you are a geologist who is forced to look over pictures day after day of amazing rock formations.. .and never get one chance to hit a rock with a hammer to see what's inside? Wouldn't you try to come up with something that added some flavor and humor to your job in order to relieve the "unrequited rockhound syndrome?"
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

NASA/JPL assigns fanciful absurd names to rocks all the time. It started with the Pathfinder misson. The absurd naming practice has some value, as opposed to calling every rock studied "the rock over there", "the rock to the right of that rock", "he little rock next to the big rock", etc.

Actually it started with the Viking missions. Just look up "Big Joe" for an example. They were naming rocks before I was born.

rlb2, have you heard about the red berries oppy imaged? Any chance you could put together a color shot. The b/w doesn't have much appeal.

Have a safe trip. Looking foward to seeing your work again when you get re-hooked up.

Here is a new one from JPL all I did was lighten it, sharpened it, and added contrast.
Ron Bennett

I will see what I can do, I may have to leave on a business trip for the next day or two. I will post it as soon as I can, Swampcat does good work on Endurance maybe he knows which ones you are talking about.

In the mean time here is two parts of a pan-view image shot of Endurance just released today that shows the path of Oppy down the crater wall. All I did was enlarge it some and sharpened, added contrast and brighten it a bit.

Ron Bennett

Here is a close-up of the crater wall that I thought was interesting. I had to lighten it so much that the sky turned yellowish to bring out more detail.

It Looks like layering to me.
Ron Bennett
