IMO, what you're seeing in that image is the result of misaligned color registration due to
spacecraft motion.

That was one of my concerns - thanks.

I realized it isn't the same as the Martian images, everything is in motion. To get the right
filter images, RGB right in a row without distortion is a challenge when your trying to image the rings
unless you are flying directly away or towards the rings at the time of exposure. The RGB images I used
were right in a row but still they came-out distorted. They may have increased or decreased the field of
view in one of the RGB channels.

Mimas came out as imaged, similar to our moons color.......The camera was focused on Mimas at the time
of the exposure so everything else would move a bit.......

Can't wait to see your images - to compare notes......

Ron Bennett

"Can't wait to see your images - to compare notes...... "

Yeah, the mods are a little slow on the weekends getting images approved.

Anyway, the image I posted at 1:15am is the same image you posted (with a little cropping). It was very difficult to get everything reasonably registered. As you said, the camera was targeted at Mimas, which caused the background rings to move in the field of view much more than Mimas. It took several layers of cutting and pasting the raw images to line things up in that and the next image.

I found that some of the Mimas images were rather easy to register, but some were not. In one case I had to resize one of the raws to get it to match the other two. It's pretty much impossible in some cases to get the color registered perfectly because of the spacecraft motion, but I guess that's the fun in doing it.

------------------

Rhea:

-------------------------------------------------------------------

"I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical. Great job.

I'm going to play around with the rings a little more as soon as I can break free.
Ron Bennett

I hope I've got this image of Enceladus turned right side up. I can't figure out which end is north and which is south. I figure it's a 50-50 chance I'm right. If not, just turn your monitor upside down for proper viewing.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

"I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical. Enceladus - Quite a intriguing world. As aqb_farside implied this does look like a candidate for an ice covered water world like Europa.

A darker look at it.
Ron Bennett

An assymetric density gradient is believed to have been the 'clincher' for the current orientation of the earth's moon relative to earth. So you are looking in the right direction. Probing the interiors of these satellites while possible, is not likely to be accomplished in my lifetime. A network of siesmographs and 'thumpers' will need to be deployed to each satellite. The results would definitely be profoundly interesting, but the logistics of doing the job with the current space budget is beyond daunting. A seismograph on Enceladus? I'm salivating at the prospect. 'Listening' to the ice creak and groan as Enceladus glides around Saturn, and the rumbling of the volcanoes or geysers or whatever it is that's going on would be spectacular.

Tomographic 'images' have been made of the interior of earth, a complete volume of data for all the major solar system objects would real explain so many things.

I've only ever had 1 astronomy course, it was at a small community college 22 years ago. Must have been a good instructor (he was!, still see him interviewed on local TV when something astronomical happens). And as was recently pointed out to me in Free Space, I'm a stupid farmer.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

Here are two approximate true color images of Dione. The raw images for the one on the left were taken March 7 from approximately 1.6 million km away, while the right raws were taken March 6 from approximately 1.4 million km away. Both images were created using infrared, green and ultraviolet filters.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

"I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical. As always, the pix are very much appreciated and so gosh darn usefull. That color Enceladus from 170000 km is really nice. I like that 'alien vista' effect, doncha' know.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!
