"...the pix are very much appreciated and so gosh darn usefull."

Glad to be of some use, vogon13. I just wish I could do more. There are a bunch of Enceladus images waiting to be put together, but between my job and dealing with dial-up I just don't have the time I would like to devote to this. The good news is that I've ordered broadband and should be up and running on that in about a week. Can't wait. Now, if my employer would just stop sending me out of town...

-------------------------------------------------------------------

"I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical. May I pose a question, oh mighty swampcat of the images;

Is it possible to crop 2 consecutive (or nearly consective) Cassini images so that only the portions of the 2 pictures that overlap are posted here, side by side, small enough to fit on the screen at the same time so the "cross-eyed" 3D process would work?

You can imagine which moon I'm hoping you will find this idea irresistable for..................

Thank you for your consideration, and once again, the pix are tremendous.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

"...oh mighty swampcat of the images..."

Gee, I like that...has a nice ring to it.

"Is it possible to crop 2 consecutive (or nearly consective) Cassini images so that only the portions of the 2 pictures that overlap are posted here, side by side, small enough to fit on the screen at the same time so the "cross-eyed" 3D process would work?"

Might be worth a try. It would depend on what images are available. Unfortunately, I'm leaving town in about 2 hours and will not return until Wednesday evening, then I have to go out of town again early Thursday morning, so won't get much chance to work on this until maybe Friday. The good news is that my broadband activation kit should arrive today (while I'm out of town, sigh). Oh well, will have some time off next week with my new broadband connection and maybe I can get something done...unless maybe rlb2 (or someone else) can come up with something between now and then (hint, hint).

-------------------------------------------------------------------

"I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical. Here's a lovely picture of Dione, from the raw images section of the Cassini website. Saturn's rings form what I think is the backdrop (although it's really hard to tell in some of these pictures what's in the foreground and what's in the background; the rings seem to be particularly confusing to the untrained eye).

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Calli,

I agree with you, to this 'untrained' eye, I see no rings, in front or behind this picture...

Rings almost edge on, an unfamiliar angle. You can make out the ansae (handles) in the inner right hand portion of the streak. Tip of ring system would be to the left (and off the edge of the monitor)as you view this image. Suspect Dione is foreground and rings are background.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

I checked Cassini's position and you are correct -- Dione is between Cassini and Saturn right now, ergo the rings are in the background.

I found another raw image that shows the opposite situation with Rhea. This was taken March 20, and it's very obvious which is in the foreground, because the rings cut clearly across Rhea's disk.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

hmmm...I wonder why the Iapetus crowd hasn't bawled about the central mountain peaks in the craters.
Somewhere I have a picture of the results of 500 lbs. (IIRC) of explosives being detonated on alluvial soil. Crater even has concentric ridges interior, just like some of the craters on the moon. Will try to find picture and see if there is a central peak.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

That would be neat. I generally understand the models that explain them, but good ol' fashion experiments (and piles of explosives) are just more impressive.

--------------------SaiphMOD@gmail.com -------------------

"This is my Timey Wimey Detector. Goes "bing" when there's stuff. It also fries eggs at 30 paces, wether you want it to or not actually. I've learned to stay away from hens: It's not pretty when they blow" -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Found the pix. In one a 500 ton (!) (not pound) sphere of high explosives was detonated in contact with soil. Big hulking crater formed with circular ridges. Other test created a nice crater with a central peak. Craters were in the 80 to 100 meter range (big). Really do look like craters we see all over the solar system.

Apparently crater formation is well enough understood now to deflect all but the most determined alien conspiracy fan.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!
