I read all four books and thought what a great series of movies they would make. Then I read that Morgan Freeman and others were working on it. Now it appears the project is dead. What happened?
Bob DeWoody

What happened?

Don't know... David Fincher (The Game, Se7en, Fight Club) was to direct it, so I was looking forward to this film (also because it is one of few sci-fi books I really enjoyed reading). Alas, not even the website is online anymore.

Rendevous with Rama was one of those books I enjoyed so much that I limited my reading to just a few pages a day in order to make it last longer. The Gentry Lee infected sequels were campy and uninspired. I like the vision of old Sir Arthur taking his cane to the insipid Mr. Lee. Actually we're lucky it's not a movie - it be as campy and corny as Star Wars. dannyd

I guess I'm the odd man out. I did enjoy the original book the most. Especially the idea that even if there are intelligent beings flying around the galaxy they most likely don't care about the fact that we are here and won't even stop to investigate.

But I also read all three of the sequals and found them interesting in their own way. It seems to me that Gentry Lee has the qualifications to write as he has been in the space program for a long time.
Bob DeWoody

I read them all and the degeneration of the colony on Rama seemed pretty believeable to me. Also the decision of leaders on earth to send misfits to populate the human contingent seemed right in line with events here and now. I wonder if any of you read all three of the follow up books or just quit halfway through the first one.
Bob DeWoody

...because Hollywood would have to inject romance, ray guns, and cathartic gobbledegook about the state of humanity as they see it in the early 21st century all of which has very little similarity to the hard sci-fi of the 60's where character developement was subordinate to setting and plot.

If I want character development, I'll read a novel.

I'm not going to hold my breath on this one.
"All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. We must never, ever be boring" - Chuck Palahniuk.

I wouldn't either... 2009 is a long time to hold one's breath .

A great movie it could be.

"If something's hard to do, then it's not worth doing." - Homer Simpson

I wouldn't mind if movies like this were done on the cheap with a no-name cast, decent but cheap special effects.

Something like this? Rendezvous with Rama

***

Cool, like a warped sim city! The production team should hire both these guys and give them a budget to work with!

***

Damn, my mind is going. I walked down to the library, SPECIFICALLY to withdraw the first book, to see what you guys had enjoyed, and then stood there thinking "What did I come here for?".

I even looked right AT some Asimov books.

Early onset senesnence
