Good stuff Andrew!<br />I'm assuming the are combining HIRISE and Shallow Subsurface Radar information for each potential landing site.

Hi portercc,<br /><br />Common sense would dictate probing any potential landing site.<br /><br />I have heard nothing of the SHARON results on board MRO.<br /><br />I think that they will be extremely careful.<br /><br />The landing site areas I posted, will shortly be entering the bitter cold<br />of the Martian Winter.<br /><br />Soon, the observations made of the area of the failed Mars Polar Lander<br />should be due.<br /><br />Will be good to see if it did land safely & did not talk for some reason, or <br />it crashed!!!<br /><br />Andrew Brown. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <p><font color="#000080">"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. July 20, 2007<br /><br />Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Mission Status: <br /><br />Engineers are gathering and analyzing engineering data to understand the <br />cause of a software error between NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter <br />and one of its instruments. That event, on July 17, caused the spacecraft to <br />turn off two of its science instruments--the Mars Climate Sounder and <br />Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars. I have looked through a lot of HiRISE images, but these are the oddest dunes I've seen yet. Very complex, linear dunes with 'combs'. Some of them are terminated by 'dove' like features. I don't know much about dunes but these might be the result of the wind direction changing a lot. Perhaps it has something to do with the elevation differences to the north and west of the dune field causing turbulence and eddies in the air flow. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <p> </p><p> </p> </div>

From the MRO JPL website.<br /><br />News Releases<br /><br />Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Status Report: Camera Concern Resolved; More Than <br />3,000 Images Returned<br />August 24, 2007 <br /><br />Diagnostic tests and months of stable, successful operation have resolved <br />concerns raised early this year about long-term prospects for the <br />powerful telescopic camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. <br /><br />The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on the <br />orbiter has now taken more than 3,000 images of Mars, resolving features as small <br />as a desk in targeted areas covering thousands of square miles of the <br />Martian surface. <br />Already, this is the largest Mars data set ever acquired by a single experiment. <br />The camera is one of six instruments on the orbiter. <br /><br />During the first three months after the orbiter's primary science phase began in <br />November, researchers saw an increase in noise and pixel dropouts in data <br />from seven of the camera's 14 detectors.<br />The effects on image quality <br />were small in all but two detectors, but the trend raised concerns noted in a February, 7 <br />news release . <br /><br />Tests have yielded an explanation for the earlier pattern, and the camera's <br />performance record shows the noise stopped getting worse after about <br />three to four months of the science phase. <br /><br />Alfred McEwen of the University of Arizona, Tucson, principal investigator for<br />the camera, said, "I'm happy to report that there has been no detectable <br />degradation over the past five months." <br /><br />A team at Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., Boulder, Colo., designer and builder<br />of the instrument, has used an engineering model of the camera's focal-plane <br />system to successfully duplicate the problem. Some parts of Mars are the pits <img src="/images/icons/wink.gif" /><br /><br /><font color="orange">The High Resolution Imaging Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has confirmed that a dark pit seen on Mars in an earlier HiRISE image really is a vertical shaft that cuts through lava flow on the flank of the Arsia Mons volcano. Such pits form on similar volcanoes in Hawaii and are called "pit craters."<br /><br />This view, a small portion of a HiRISE image taken on Aug. 9, 2007, shows a dark pit about 150 meters (492 feet) in diameter set in a lava flow. The image was taken with the camera pointing slightly westward, instead of straight down. It catches the eastern wall of the pit lit by afternoon sunlight.
