"You can see Opportunity as well as its tracks"

That is just too cool. Is that the first time in history that we can photograph a lander on Mars?

I'm speechless... Truly we live in an age of wonders.

Well, that's awesome!

So, if they can photograph Opportunity, do we dare hope they photograph Viking 1 & 2? Maybe take a look for MPL?

I REALLY would like to see photos of VL 1 & 2....

"Including one of Opportunity!!

Here is the 4045x5085 pixel image of Victoria Crater. You can see Opportunity as well as its tracks. This really provides a scale to the crater's size.

http://hiroc.lpl.arizona.edu/images/TRA/TRA_000873_1780/Victoria-color-annot.jpg "

Neat. So they really *did* land on Mars!

But I'm noticing something that bugs me. The MRO images are presented in false color, like the ESA orbiter images.

This is a distortion of reality. Mars isn't blue and orange!

- Ed Kyle

OMG OMG OMG

What you all said times 10!

Words cannot describe my feelings when looking at that image and everything that it represents. I think I'm going to cry!

Is it time to make this thread sticky?

Don't let who you are keep you from becoming who you want to be!

I think so; when we start getting daily updates, it's time for a sticky.

Actually, if it's getting daily updates, it doesn't need a sticky, it will always float to the top

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Does NASA post raw images for MRO like they do for the rovers. I did not happen to see a link to them MRO home page.

Don't let who you are keep you from becoming who you want to be!

Does anyone know when MRO might get photos of the suspected MPL and Beagle2 crash sites?

> You want the HiRISE Operations Center./i>

Yes, below is a link to some gullies on the wall of a crater. We have seen a number of these over the last few years -- it was very exciting when they were first discussed a few years back. Now we are getting incredible close ups of some of these images.

Terra Sirenum Gullied Crater

From the description: "Current leading hypotheses explaining the origin of gullies include erosion from seepage or eruption of water from a subsurface aquifer, melting of ground ice, or surface snow; and dry landslides. The nature of gullies will be further investigated utilizing the high-resolution and color capabilities of HiRISE."

Theres only one word to describe MRO...spectacular!

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. Those who make it happen, those who watch it happen...and those who do not know what happened.

SPACE.com 2006/11/01

MRO WILL look for MIA probes

Take the link above for the fall article but below is my summary.

Priority projects will be;

1. higher latitude data collection for the Phoenix lander mission.

2. a list of roughly 50 or more Mars Science Laboratory targets prior to a landing site workshop in October 2007.

3. early views of the Viking Lander 2 site.

4. a second view of Victoria Crater to pair with the one just taken in order to produce a stereo image before lighting conditions change too much.

5. survey other 'new' sites for future exploration.

6. likely after May 2007 search for remains of the MPL, due to local lighting effects.

7. may survey the landing eclipse of Beagle 2, but a much harder task due to smaller size and duration missing (being dusted over).

HiRISE has already spotted Opportunity at Victoria Crater so will be the primary search tool, but CRISM can also be used, by searching for the mineral signatures of the probes or their remains.

NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has successfully tested another key part of its payload, a versatile radio for relaying communications with robots on the surface of Mars.
JPL 2006/11/17 article

Its seems the silence is due to full systems testing.

Yes, too good. This would mean a major resolution down grade in order to post to this forum. But shall horde to my HD!
