Hmm...this might not work, since the links are to the first post in the threads, not the most recent.

I have used something like this "Table of contents thread" approach to cataloging helpful threads on the C++ boards I moderate. It works well there, but then again, the head of the thread is where they need to go.

I don't see poiting to the head of the thread as that big a deal. We can get to the tail easily, and your TOC helps find the thread. Good idea!

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

Okay, I'm going to discuss this again with the admins. In the meantime, does happen to know the UBB code/HTML url to create a link to the end of a thread?

To make this work, you need the script guys to generate links like in the "viewing list of posts" section.

"...does happen to know the UBB code/HTML url to create a link to the end of a thread? "

I suspect (without actually knowing) that you can't. The URLs which lead to the 'first unread' portion of a thread are not a generic (i.e. uplink.space.com/....@part=lastunread), they are a specific link to a part and post #. This means that the URLs are dynamic, and are constructed when the page HTML is being put together by the PHP engine. If there was a means to simply put in a generic rather than calculate the last page and post for each user, I would expect that this would be the method used.

This, of course, assumes that there does not exist a method that the programmers of this messageboard are unaware of...

I suspected as much, but thought I'd ask anyway. There are a lot of HTTP arguments sent with the page request - some of them make sense (eg &board=missions) some of them do not (eg &vc=1), just wondering if there was a way to 'play' with them.

I tried the code you gave me, but all I got was a page of "We are the Vogonites, resistance is futile", repeating over and over. I must say the colour shifting effect was strangely compelling, if I wasn't late I could have spent hours looking at it.

Global domination website still under construction, lobe worm didn't implant properly, which is why you still have free will. Check back after Microsoft updates implantation subroutines.

With a partial implant, you may be rather sensitive to nitrogen for several days, please try to limit your exposure.

Thank you for your patience.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

...of course on the other end of the equation -- this really should have been (should be) a locked thread, so the thread links don't get buried...

Yeah, it was going to be locked, but then the links didn't work right. I left it open for a few comments.

I for one dont like the idea. I basically only come to this particular topic for mission updates and you now turned 1 click into 3 or more.

Previous:
1. Click on mission thread and it takes you to the last unread post.

Now:
1. Click on Missions thread.
2. Click on specific thread you want.
3. Guess which page you read last and somehow find the last unread post.

Bad.

>I for one dont like the idea. I basically only come to this particular topic for mission updates and you now turned 1 click into 3 or more.
That's not the intention. What we are trying to do is have the link in the thread update automatically, the admins have been asked if it's possible, they are going to get back to us.
Bear in mind though that active mission threads will stay near the top naturally.

naja, won't your 'links' thread work naturally anyway? Uplink knows who you are once you log in and, hence, how far through a thread you have read.

If I go to your links thread and hit the STS-114 thread, it should take me automatically to the section of that thread which is new or unread for me.

I think ......

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

That's what I wanted to happen, but it doesn't. The problem is that the "unread post" url is created dynamically by the .php parser. It shows up as a #Postxxxx anchor at the end of the URL. There's no way for me to create that link.

Bummer. It was a good idea though. But, as you said, democracy will ensure that the important mission threads will naturally gravitate towards the top of page 1 anyway.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

Yes, it sucks. Sorry.

No sticky threads either, I think most people want to know where the posts they haven't read yet can be found.

Sticky threads defeat the whole purpose of high-lighting the latest posts. Let 'em all float. We're grown ups, we can find 'em when we want 'em. If if they sink a little, fine. We know where to look.

Permanent sticky threads are a pain and confusing. This is even worse.

I wish I could remember
But my selective memory
Won't let me - Mark Oliver Everett

The problem is if you let go completely of some form of reference threads, be it either a single mission stickyed thread or a stickyed referring thread, you end up with people posting multiple threads on the same subject because they either can't find the specific mission thread or don't know that there is one. It is then harder to follow all the conversations about that mission.

A compromise would perhaps be a combination of both, a stickyed referral thread for old missions and individual stickyed threads for current missions.

Perhaps a new definition of current is needed. Say if a mission features more then twice a week on the SDC main site if should be stickyed, otherwise let the thread drift as is.

PS why are we all using the word stickyed rather than stuck?
Multiple threads I can live with. Besides they get KO'd more often than not.

Multiple sticky threads or the tidying exercise above, I can not.

Ain't no stickyed here mate!

I wish I could remember
But my selective memory
Won't let me - Mark Oliver Everett
