Why not refuel the LAV after landingto make 'hops' around Mars, visiting interesting spots.<br />If a two stage design is used, the Ascent stage can be fitted with its own landing struts. <br />Fuel stores can be preemptively dropped at various hot-spots on the Martian surface.
