Obviously I never had a crush on her, but I always wanted to be her. She really nailed the companion concept. What impressed me the most was her ability to a) scream beautifully without seeming like a wuss, and b) express quite plausible fear at the most ridiculous monsters. I mean seriously; a lot of the Dr Who monsters really are silly, but if Sarah Jane Smith is scared of them, it makes them seem a lot more menacing. She *believed* in the situations, and that made the audience believe too. Many of the companions did this; it's something any competent actor needs to be able to do. (Especially stage actors, who haven't the benefit of trick shots and post-production FX.) But she always showed a real gift for it, believing in the situations so vividly that the audience would suspend disbelief even for the really silly ones, like "Invasion of the Dinosaurs". But she didn't take it too seriously either. She took it exactly as seriously as was neccesary, and so it was always a very entertaining adventure. And she made a very good foil for the Doctor as well.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"
