I think "Prince of Darkness" has to rank up there pretty high on my "scary" meter. There was something there that was a bit unnerving.

A list (Use a few to compile this one)

"Prince of Darkness" - Unnerving

"Rosemary's Baby" - Uh.. kind of say's it all.

"Event Horizon" - Just a great mix of sci-fi, pop culture and the occult.. way weird. Sorta like a "Hellraiser" in space.

"The Exorcist" - It's probably the King of all Scary Movies. Wonderfully done. "The Exorcist III" is pretty awesome too.

"Jaws" - Yeah, not your typical "scary" movie. But, for suspense, pulse quickening "boo" moments, it's just plain awesome.

"Alien" - Another great, untypical, Halloween movie. Yeah, it's sci-fi. But, it's more a sci-fright monster movie than anything else.

"Halloween" - A can't miss flick. Michael Myers does NOT play Austin Powers in this one. Teen scream dream movie.

"The Thing" - I've seen it too many times to be shocked by it. But, many put it close to the top for scare factor. It's a 10/10 any way you can think about it.

I haven't seen many horror movies lately. The ones that normally get under my skin are the ones that are just unnerving. You know, the ones that just make you feel creepy? "Scary" doesn't count for much with me unless the tale-teller can get in my head. Then, that's when it gets fun. :)

I put on my robe and wizard hat...

Ah yes, Event Horizon is a good one! I haven't seen it in quite some time. I was always spooked by the scene when they guy is out in space with no helmet and the blood is pouring out of his eyes!

Techies: We do it in the dark.

"Put your hand on a stove for a minute and it seems like an hour.
CRAP!!!! I lost my whole list! I accidentally clicked on a link.

*pouts*

Okay, here goes again.

"Something Wicked This Way Comes" - suitable for most children; screenplay by Ray Bradbury, loosely based on his book of the same name; stars Jonathon Pryce as the spine-tingling villain Mr Dark

"Watcher in the Woods" - another kid-suitable Disney flick, but very creepy, with the recurrent image of a blindfolded girl trapped in a mirror world, pleading desperately for help, while the only girl who can see her tries to make sense of the strange clues she's finding, and her sister becomes possessed.

"The Shining" - wonderfully good thriller; who can forget Jack Nicholson in this one?

"M" - an early talkie by Fritz Lang, this features Peter Lorre as a recently-released psychopathic pedophile. He's supposedly been cured. He hasn't. Little girls start to go missing, and so much police pressure is brought to bear that the organized criminal underworld decides to catch the guy.

"Nosferatu" - talking of old German movies, this silent by F W Murnau is very creepy indeed, and has surprisingly good SFX. Though Bram Stoker's widow succeeded in getting the movie's name changed from "Dracula", she didn't quite succeed in getting all prints destroyed -- so we get to enjoy it today. ;-)

"Shadow of the Vampire" - a sort of fictional "making of Nosferatu", this black comedy/thriller starring John Malkovich and Willem Dafoe tells a fantastical story of Nosferatu's filming -- but with the added claim that the strange actor playing "Count Orlock", Max Schreck, might actually have been a vampire himself!

"Silence of the Lambs" - Anthony Hopkins is totally believable as this brilliantly psychopathic killer, and although his character doesn't kill very many people (and indeed, the killings being investigated are the fault of a different psychopath), his intense, captivating performance is what makes the movie so effective. He makes your skin crawl.

"Army of Darkness" - this is just plain silly; the third Evil Dead installment is a romp parodying the entire B-movie slasher/horror genre, but it's a riot. Highly recommended. ;-)

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

My favorite is the 1963 film "The Haunting", starring Julie Harris and Claire Bloom. It's often is ranked among the "top 20" scariest films of all time. One of the cool things about it is it accomplishes an extraordinary level of suspense and horror without a single drop of blood in the entire film. There has never been a better flick about a haunted house, in my opinion!

Plot

Eleanor Lance, Theodora, and Luke Sanderson accompany Dr. John Markway during an investigation into theparanormal. Markway believes that an old mansion with a sinister past called Hill House will provide him with the proof he seeks of the existence of the supernatural. Luke is the next in line to inherit the house, and is volunteered by the current owner to join Markway both as a skeptic and overseer. Eleanor and Theodora are the only responders to an invitation Markway sent out to various people who had come in contact with the supernatural at some point in their lives. After the four meet up in Hill House, strange things begin to happen, most of which seems centered on Eleanor. Eleanor finds that she enjoys the attention the house affords her, and becomes drawn deeper and deeper in by the forces within the house.

I was telling Boris that I recently watched The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler on YouTube. Remember Kolchak? Just found a hard-to-find CD containing music from both by Robert Colbert, who did all of the Dan Curtis productions. I'm also fond of Orson Welles' 1938 War of the Worlds radio show, 70th anniversary this year. A stupid "B" movie from the sixties ruined me when I was a kid..."Two on a Gullitine". Had a very hard time going up attic stairs for some time after that one. Another old movie wrecked my son for a while..."The Blob"....hard to figure. And does anyone remember "The Day of the Triffids"? The alien trees are out to get you...unless there is an ocean nearby!!

'Day Of The Triffids' deserves a remake much closer to the John Wyndham book IMO. IIRC Marvel did a graphic novel that was pretty darned good so maybe they could take a whack at it.

All of the above are in my collection either as DVD or 'backed up' to DVD tapes.

Anyone mention 'Willard' yet?

How about 'Night of the Living Dead' & its sequels?

'Basket Case'?

'Ghost Story' - based on Peter Straub's novel? Quote (Eva/Alma): I will take you places you've never been. I will show you things that you have never seen and I will see the life run out of you....

There's a site that sells replicas of the pork-pie hat, a seeksucker suit is easy to find but I'll have to head to E-Bay to find mid-'70s vintage small cassette recorder and strobe film camera.
