Are you referring to another Brian Aldiss classic - Non-Stop?

Almost correct, Avaunt. In fact, I'll accept it as the answer, though the one I was thinking was the first book, The Integral Trees, not the sequel you named.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Next novel:

They were colonists en route to their new home, carefully prepared and certain no possibility of sentient life existed [edit - "On their intended new home"]. And then an accident occurs. The ship is off course, and crashes on a strange, cold world with a red sun. It is lost.

Do they try to repair the ship (which appears unlikely) and continue to their original destination, which is what part of [edit - "The Crew" - Do'oh! ], and the Captain staunchly advocates, or try to make a go of it there, which many of the colonists wish? There are many problems (including hints of native sentient life, which their ethics preclude interfering with), and it may not even be possible.

Don't forget the occasional hallucinogenic pollen in the wind...

Any takers?

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Except for the pollen part -- it sounds like The Black Sun by Jack Williamson.

Oh, man, it's a fairly well-known series from the 70s.

A clue: Psychic powers.

[Btw, I edited the original post for this quiz question.]

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Are you referring to The Expendables series by Edmund Cooper (aka Richard Avery)? The fourth book, The Venom of Argus has hallucinogenic pollen.

Ok, time.

This would be the Darkover series by Marion Zimmer Bradley, and the book I referred to is Darkover Landfall, the first book in the long and rich series.

I'll spend a while coming up with another question. Until then, anyone else feel like posing a brain-teaser, have at it.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Aha, I never read those mate. Do you suggest I would enjoy them?.

Right.

A religious dictatorship is struggling to complete its control of the world. Fighting them is our hero, in an undercover position within their "health" system, supposedly above suspiscion himself because he holds a semi-religious title which the ruling party of the dictators have imbuded with almost mystical regard.

The "health" system combines medical health with a semi-soviet "political/mental health", enabling people to be "judged" as "evil" under the political/religious guidelines. judgement is usually simply political in nature, for non-conformity, but they use the mask of "Failing" a EEG test as proof. "Evil" people are brainwashed into conformity or even executed.

The hero, and his fellow resistance, are under-mining the rule of law with accusations against key members of society, eventually leading to the break down of society itself because too many key people are "Brainwashed" and production, supply, etc, becomes too broken to sustain society.

Oh, and, sexual agents who have modifications that allow them to gain control of their target through augmented orgasms.

Darkover is dark and full of intrigue, with elements of hard Science Fiction, mild Fantasy, and telepathic powers.

MZB must have written 15 books in the series.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Dang. I should have gotten that one. I've only read a couple of the Darkover books though so I'm not quite that familiar with their milieu.

It may have worked equally well with the "Coldfire" Trilogy by CS Friedman except the series doesn't detail the first landing of humans, only what they eventually had to deal with.
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

No mate.

The hero is not heroic either, it is total war, with rape just another tool.

He does not know who he is, where he came from, how he got there. He feels he is destined for greatness, but is no one. He falls into the company of a crew of odd street entertainers while his memories slowly return. He was to be King, but was deposed in a shadowy secret plot - and he will be king again, with a little help from his friends...

Any takers?

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Lord Valentine's Castle by Robert Silverberg.

Here's another one:

He was a policeman, and a pretty good one. Suddenly an accident occurs, and he is on a parallel, primitive Earth, where he turns a small country into a fierce warrior nation.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Excellent!
