Ok, the answer is: The Frankenstein Papers, by Fred Saberhagen.

Next Quiz question:

He is a Doctor, selfless and dedicated. He is stationed in one of the most (medically) dangerous postings, and must endure rich pushy people, roughneck ship's crew, and deadly diseases from out on the frontier.

The name of this story is...?

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Nope. Keep on going in that genre and era though.

[This seems like a low-population thread. Should I keep this going or ditch it?]

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

OK, further clue:

He is forced into investigating a tramp ship with a "disease - warning" beacon triggered, and made to do so by the influence of a rich, effete man.

[That may have given in away, right there]

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

How about Sector General by James White?

Oh and please keep it going, if nothing else it gives good ideas on books that I haven't read.

No, not that one either, though I know of it, and it's reputedly a good read.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

No, but good guess.

Ok, and the answer is: "For the Public," by Bernard I. Kahn.

Next one:

They are all-powerful and have assumed the names and legends of the pantheon of Hindu Gods on a world far far from here, many years into the future.

[This really should be easy]

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Well, then one of you state the name of the book. Lord of Light, Ze, la Zany.

OK, my turn.

Supernatural atmospheric effects translate the stories protagonist to an alternate world. She kills the first person she sees, which sets both her victims rival and ally on to the protagonists tail.
Joining forces with an unlikely band of heros, she fights an army, and eventually kills the ally of her first victim in single combat.

No, and now it occurs to me that it is only fair to say, thinking this through, the book isn't Sci Fi, but fantasy.

In fact, I will spill and let someone else have a go, as mine conscience troubles me.

The Wizard of Oz

Hi everyone, I am back from another trip away. I see this thread has ground to a halt. I am sure this is too easy, but let me ask it anyway.

In which novel are the earth and the moon in tide locked orbits, and joined by webs of huge spider-like plants called Traversers?

The Smoke Ring?. L. Niven?.

One of the MOST under-rated of his books, imho. "How can I top Ringworld . . . . aha, do without the ring?".
