Since we keep getting threads of the "SF Book?" thread variety, I thought maybe a continual quiz thread might be amusing.

Here's one for you Fen to name:

A man of the 1960s (?) is accidently frozen, then decanted hundreds of years later. When he is shown the future Earth, he notices that everything appears whiz-bang future, but that it's actually mostly sham designed for the stupid masses.

And the world is actually run entirely by the fractional numbers of the total population who "have a clue" and intelligence. The plebes are incapable of running anything.

Can anyone identify this story?

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

At first I thot it maybe the new(?) Buck Rogers series, but I knew that was not right.

Then I thought about an old comedy show with Woody Allen, called, Sleepers. The show dealt with a hapless man flash frozen from a unexpected surgery and woke up in a future where idioticy was supreme. Then there was Bananas, a name I first thot of, but realized that was not right.

Now, I also know this is not the one you are probably looking for, but why not. It was from the same time frame. Henry

Dang!

I have actually read that story, but I cannot remember the name off hand. It might be in one of my anthologies at home, but might also have been in one I got from the library years ago.

This is the same story where people have super sporty cars, but the guy realizes that they are only going about 40 mph, and the car engine actually is rigged to sound like it is at high rpm, there is a wind generator to make it feel like your flying, etc, right?

Vote Libertarian

It has the themes of a Philip K Dick story as well, but not one I recall.

-----------------------------------------------------

Ask not what your Forum Software can do do on you,

Ask it to, please for the love of all that's Holy, STOP !

I'll second that it sounds like PK Dick to me.

Pure guess is - The Divine Invasion - because that deals with cryogenics.

Although I wish it was - The Man Whose Teeth Were All Exactly Alike - because that is such a great title.

I watched "idiocracy" the other night on HBO, sounds similar. dude is frozen in some army experiment, awakens 500 years later and finds everyone is a moron. he get busted for some petty crime and as he is processed into jail they test his IQ to see what jail job he should have, he turns out to be the smartest man alive. becomes secretary of interior. funny/stupid film

It's likely to be the very first science fiction novel itself, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus.

I wish I could remember
But my selective memory
Won't let me - Mark Oliver Everett

No, what I meant was, Interview With A Vampire is fantasy/horror, definitely not SF.

I wish I could remember
But my selective memory
Won't let me - Mark Oliver Everett

Ah, I see.

No, this is F/SF - mostly Science Fiction. The two clues are from the blurb or opening of the book.

Final clue: It is a lot more recent than Shelley's work.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Hmm, Much closer because i said "Frankenstein Unbound" or much closer because i said "I do not know".

I had thought that he wrote a later sort of sequel to FU (Lol pun un-intended) that was about Drakula (sort of) with a time machine/train that was really quite effectively scary . . . bt I can not find proof of this, so maybe again it is my overactive imagination that in other cases has "remembered" books and movies as sequels to famous books. And actually just imagined the sequel out of (w)holey cloth.
I ought to write them down, i sometimes think.
