So what is Pluto is smaller than other Planets? It has been that way since it was first discovered in 1930! If the Astronomers knew that the public would be enraged, why would they do it i ask? You would think 2,300km Diameter would be enough to make a planet, especially after all these years it has been one!

Yes, of course Pluto is still there, but not as a Planet. I do not think this desicion will last long though, as most people are thinking: "Well, Pluto has been a planet for as long as i can rememeber, why do they decide to shoo it away now?"

I blame the media for all the stupid "Pluto kicked out" stories.

Pluto is still there. There's no reason to remove it from solar system displays and textbooks just because it's classified differently.

Yes wonky, there too much of prees houling for nothing. In science so many thing like changing happen. No question of public outrage, much ado about nothing.

It's only indirectly to do with size... its the fact that there many other large bodies in the Kuiper Belt (where pluto orbits) - some of these are over 1000km in diameter... its the fact that Pluto has not swept up these other bodies. It'd be like Earth sharing its orbit with other balls of rock several thousand kilometres in diameter. Pluto was reclassified for exactly the same reason why Ceres was in the 1860's - too many other large objects in its orbit

*putting on mod hat*

Folks, I think we should try to keep the discussion of Pluto's status in one of the existing threads as much as possible.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

If it was up to the average person to decide things like this, astronomy would be very confusing and disorderly. The fact is Pluto is not a planet by definition, nor has it ever been, they just thought it was when they discovered it.

--____________________________________________--

Don't be too hard on me...I'm only in PHY 1010 ;)

         The following goes without saying:

It totally sucks. That Stingray barb is SO dead when i get my hands on it! I'm just really depressed... Obviously not as depressed as his wife, Terri and his two children.

In case the humor is too subtle, it refers to an old parable about shutting the barn door after all the horses have left the barn.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Well, if that's enough about Pluto, then the topic is still open for chatting.

It's close physically impossible for other Earthsized rocks to orbit close to Earths orbit, thus it is 100% related to size. And when you look at how much more mass Earth has compared to Pluto, then Earth hasn't really cleaned it's neighbourhood too much more than what Pluto has. The bigger marbles you want to put in a box, the less will fit in it.

"It still orbits in the Ecliptic."

That statement is flat wrong. It does not orbit in the ecliptic. That is one reason why it is not a planet. The fact is, Pluto would never have been called a planet if its size was not grossly overestimated. Pluto is no more a planet than is Ceres -- which at one time was also called a planet. Now if Pluto was the only object with its characteristics, it might be worth ignoring the original mistake. But it is not, so it was time to correct the original mistake, which was what was properly done

Mistake? Where's the scientific meaning of the word 'planet' today? What was, in comparisation, the ancient defintion of 'planet'? You'll see, no mistakes have been made if you don't want them to have been.
