Found on Spaceweather.com and I thought this might be of interest here. It seems like a pretty big explosion:

Coronagraphs onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) have just observed a bright double-ringed coronal mass ejection (CME) billowing over the sun's western limb. At present, the source of the blast is unknown Watch the movie and stay tuned for updates ...

Really, Smersh, it's not that spectacular. Sure, it's the best in a while, but look through the SOHO archives from the last cycle peak to see what a REAL spectacular one looks like :) :)

For those of us who don't spend our free time surfing through the SOHO archives, I am really glad you posted this. I never thought I would see the day here where the self-appointed uppercrust would be looking down at us commonfolk and telling us that amazing images from space are really "not that spectacular."

Thanks, Smersh. And MW, I am SO SORRY that Smersh posted a picture that apparently didn't live up to your high standards.

You're reading too much into it. He's calling it like it is. Not as spectacular as past, more active cycle CMEs. Which is worth pointing out if Smersh and others appreciate solar weather enough to post about it..

Thanks for giving me your support robnissen.

And sorry guys but I must admit I'm not a coronal mass ejection geek who spends every waking moment monitoring SOHO, so it is indeed very possible that unfortunately I've missed some of the legendary CME's filmed in the past by that particular spacecraft.

But it's still not a bad one though is it, as CME's go? :p

It's nice. But MW's right. You should go check out the archives of solar observation. There are some real eye popping CMEs and flares. I'd link you to some select pictures but my collection got wiped out recently. You really have to see it to believe it.. Seeing some of them snap and flash, and knowing the scale of their size is really amazing. The strongest ones overload the instruments to the point that it bleeds out the CCD.

Here's one.. http://www.nasa.gov/centers/goddard/new ... flare.html
But there's at least one website with a collection of them indexed, in quality format. Either .gif or .mov. I don't recall what the site is, sorry.

Hey, thanks for the heads up. It's nice to see some solar activity for a change. You might be interested in the STEREO-A images for January 30th.

You're very welcome Michael, and thanks for that video which is also pretty impressive imo. :) Seems that solar activity has picked up a bit recently doesn't it, after quite a while with nothing much happening?

As Crocodile Dundee would say:

/Aussie accent on/ "Now THAT's a CME" /Aussie accent off/ :)

[Aussie accent] G'Day mate - Call that a CME? ;) [/Aussie accent]

Seriously Bruce ... I mean Wayne ... that one does seem to put the one I posted to shame! Here's the animation for that one: http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/hotshots ... 6/c3sm.mpg

Hey Smersh, that last one is amazing. However so was the first one! All I know is that not everyone knows where every site is in this world call www! So for me and I think a few others, any relevant post and links is important. We are all learning, some are new here, like me, and appreciate what other have to say, to teach and to share.

Wayne just wondering if this is "good enough english" for you? lol. Sorry just playing.
