I'm not sure what you mean by boiloff in the current context.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

Since its the RCS system oxidizer, are you referring to disassociation of the N2O4?

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

WHEW. I'm glad. My guess is replacing that would have been quite a big mess.

Dennis is now projected to head towards Tampa. This is getting closer

Still could go anywhere I suppose.

That's not what I said on your forum, lol.

The easternmost projection has it coming ashore just north of Tampa. The other projections have it still heading towards about Mississippi.

Just cross your fingers it stays on the northerly track and doesn't turn east.

-Ben

The one I have up on my computer now has the storm making landfall near Pensacola on Monday. The next update should be coming out in a few hours.

"The one I have up on my computer now has the storm making landfall near Pensacola on Monday"

Darn, I hope they are wrong. We are still in bad shape after Ivan. If we get nailed with a Cat 3 now....I don't even want to think about it.

Accuweather analysis puts it a little further west, like Ivan's track, which is no help.

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

The 5pm models now have it back towards the west as originally predicted.

-Ben

Great. A track like Ivan. I want to be west of it!

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

Of course, I want it to stay well west of the Cape.

But here in Tampa, I would like Dennis a little further west, like Texas!

Some day, I'll have to tell you guys and gals about the eve of the final 2004 Florida hurricane Frances. There was a wine and blues street party in downtown Dunedin, and people were getting pretty wierd.

Cool. I'll go there as I've got lots of questions on how this all works.

Meanwhile, latest from www.floridatoday.com is:

/>The storm had top sustained winds of 80 mph and was moving west-northwest close to 14 mph. It was forecast to be anywhere from the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico to the Florida Keys over the weekend.

Forecasters said Dennis could be a Category 3 hurricane with winds of 111 mph to 130 mph by the time it enters the Gulf of Mexico. But they also caution that their ability to predict a storm's strength isn't very good that far in advance.<

130mph - is that bad as far as these things go?

Already on that thread and that above was related to the Cape, given it's from a story relating to the potential rollback.

Just to drag it off-topic again for a moment, do you have to/will you want to take retirement when it arrives, SG?

I imagine there is probably a rule which compels you to do so and, with your recent health troubles, you may be looking forward to taking it.

However, I'm sure most of us regulars around here will understand and appreciate the great passion you have had for the space program, and I'll bet USA/NASA will be sorry to lose someone of your immense experience and expertise.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

I knew you really enjoy your work, so it's excellent news that there is no manditory retirement and you aren't going to be forced out before you're ready to step down.

If you're still fighting fit and up to the challenges, why not continue on. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say it's great to know we will be enjoying your contributions from inside KSC's fence for some years to come.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

"How long would it take to close out the pad in preperation for an emergency rollback?"

For that matter, what is the total turn around time. how long does it take to get the shuttle back to launch ready after a roll back?

Im really really hoping it doesnt have to roll back. Ive never seen a launch before, and my wife bought me a trip to the cape, im there the 12 through the 18th. I figure with simple weather delays, the odds should be good it would get off by then, but if it rolls back, it seems like that would be impossible (to me, I just cant remember the recycle time for the roll back)

Thanks
-Eric

".....do not plan on rolling back"

This is good to hear, and terrific that you plan to be part of the next great adventure. SG, that's one heck a of CV you got there! And we appreciate the effort you take to share your wealth of experience and up-to-date 'inside' news & views with us all, thanks.

Last rollback was STS-98. Original date was Jan 19; new date Feb. 6, and then 7th but that was for a different reason.

19 to the 6th was 18 days...exactly what the 31st is to the 13th. Would probably not be worth the try (imagine four rollbacks!).

-Ben

"However I am not NASA..."

That reminds me of the quote from the dinosaur in Toy Story: "I'm from Mattel. Well, actually I'm from a smaller company that was purchased by Mattel in a leveraged buyout."

Hey! That's not fair, there are real workers at NASA too. Well, that is assuming they dont' both have the same day off.
