The Greeks: Four elements: Earth, Water, Air, and Fire

Newton: Objects with mass attract each other...

Einstein: Mass warps space time; spacetime appear as gravity.

Then there's the Higgs Particles and Then String Theory..

With all the theories floating around, how come this question hasn't been answered. Is there truth to this...

I assume that gravity is like a magnet; we attract to it as metal attracts to magnetism.

Could pressure be what causes gravity???
We are born. We live. We experiment. We rot. We die. and the whole process starts all over again! Imagine That!

someone else can elaborate far more than i can, but in short the answer is no, because even large things without atmospheres have gravity; moons, asteroids, everything.

No, because a single atom has gravity, and pressure is not an option.

-pyoko the duck

It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.

What causes gravity?

Million dollar question, i think nobody knows the answer. But scientists are trying to find out.

Gravity worked under Newton from 1687.Then it joined Einstein company . Now Wheeler is pushing it in black hole .Quantum gravity works under Hawking also.Pay me lakh taka, not million.

I don't think this is answerable. Gravity is one effect of mater. Mass causes gravity.
If you say it is a transfer of the higgs boson then the next question is why is there a transfer of the higgs boson.
Why do electrons repel each other? Because they are both negative. So why do negatives repel each other. Well they just do.

At this point I would say that mass warps space time, that is what causes gravity. If you say WHY, then the answer is no one can say, exept for philosophers.

majornature - Could pressure be what causes gravity???

That depends on how you define pressure.

Personally, I look at "gravity" being a byproduct of mass. Then again, mass could be a byproduct of gravity.. It all depends on your view and, ultimately, whether or not we can discover the messenger of mass. It's possible that could happen within a year or so. I'm definitely staying tuned for that one.
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

Gravity is an expression of mass in spacetime, yes.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Gravity is an expression of mass in spacetime

Gravity at the singularity, is infinitly curved space-time (a ball of energy strings). Could we conclude that gravity any place else, is just the energy strings in the masses that attract each other?

Energy Strings...Sounds like it's leaning towards string theory...
We are born. We live. We experiment. We rot. We die. and the whole process starts all over again! Imagine That!

I asked: Do we have to die to find out the answer to this queston?
origin- I have seen dead people - they do not appear to be aware of anything. They appear dead.

Maybe the answer lies there. I've seen dead people too ya know...

And what I meant by grounded, is that Gravity is just there to keep us from floating off...I would assume that's why the planet "spins" or turns.
We are born. We live. We experiment. We rot. We die. and the whole process starts all over again! Imagine That!

Rotation of the mass has nothing to do with it's gravitational force (well, nothing to do with what you implied, anyways).

I'm still at the ??? stage otherwise.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

How so?

I know the question is still in it's infancy.

And what do you mean by "nothing to do with what you implied, anyways"?
We are born. We live. We experiment. We rot. We die. and the whole process starts all over again! Imagine That!

majornature it seems you might be asking more about how gravity does it's work as opposed
to what it is is that correct?

Some of the ideas I have about this are:
Gravity is actually supergravity in a currently
inaccessible dimension. I would call it supergravity because in that other dimension it would
be stronger than perceived on our normal dimensions. What we may be measuring when we measure gravity
in daily life is actually the amount of gravity leakage from the other dimension.
Usually gravity and electromagnetic radiation seem to have the same propagation speed and
mathematical limits, so I think they have a least a few similarities, at least enough
on the propagation theory, but they exist on different dimensions.
(The electromagnetic radiation from our dimensions is thought to be confined to our
'normal' dimensions, by the way.)
I know I still haven't explained the quantum machinations of gravity on warping spacetime,
on reducing distance between two gravity sources.
Hopefully at least everyone can share what they know and knowledge and ideas can progress.

edit: (what kind of pressure are you talking about? in your post)
as for rotation, earth would have gravity whether it spins or not. But it's true that without gravity
we wouldn't be able to be on earth, the earth would not be able to come together and be, and the sun
wouldn't begin to shine
The relationship that I know of between spin and gravity
is that a postulated graviton appears to be a spin2 hypthetical particle

We'll need more research on these "Energy Strings."
We are born. We live. We experiment. We rot. We die. and the whole process starts all over again! Imagine That!

I'm still trying to figure out what is meant by "Energy Strings."

Have we all forgotten about slipstring, back in February of this year? Well, I bought his book on String Theory, called Slipstring Drive, and it is fascinating. It involves M Theory, and takes it to the next level. Here's the post I was referring to:

Once relativity is incorporated into my theory of gravity, it all works fine. The core of a black hole is not a singularity, but a ball of compactified individual strings a few tens of meters across.

Because the strings are so tightly packed due to gravity, they no longer have the "room" to vibrate, and time effectively stops for them. This leaves the hole with only three defining characteristics: mass, force charge, and spin.

This also explains how Hawking radiation preserves the information within the hole. When one virtual string falls into the hole, the other one is accelerated away from the event horizon. The string that falls in aniahlates one string at the core, and it's quantum state is given to the virtual string that escapes as both virtual strings' quantum states were entangled. This way, the matter's information in the hole is recycled as Hawking radiation, and no information is destroyed.

Once relativity and quantum mechanics are unified in Membrane Gravity, it's all good

_________________________________
SlipString Drive: String Theory, Gravity, and "Faster Than Light" Travel - Explaining our universe from before start to finish and beyond.

Post Extras

Yes, well, I have read of this, but it's only one unproven idea among many. Interesting, though it doesn't really speak to the topic question, "what causes gravity?" IIRC, even in String Theory, Gravity is still the expression of mass in Spacetime.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."
