Pick a discipline - science, communications, engineering, management, education, economics, medicine, IT, art, law, literature - and to the very best you can in it, and then apply for work when it is advertised. NASA is such a diverse organisation woth some many tasks that in it and its contractors there is a place for every skill.

Jon

Whether we become a multi-planet species with unlimited horizons, or are forever confined to Earth will be decided in the twenty-first century amid the vast plains, rugged canyons and lofty mountains of Mars Arthur Clarke

Life sciences work too, not everything will be hardware. Somebody needs to figure out how to grow plants and hatch birds and farm fish.

Might as well be you.

More answers later, from many I hope.

In addition to academic studies, volunteer in community activities.
Be a good friend and partner in projects. Learn to communicate with others,
your peers and your superiors. Be a well-rounded person, not just a nerd or
just a gadfly.

One of the great things you kids will have access to is the abundance of jobs as the commercialization of space continues.

Also, following up on the community activity thing, not only volunteer, but show a willingness to be both a team player and a team leader.

Those are two of the less tangible qualities that I think NASA looks for.

"2012.. I'd also sugegst you join a space related society. For example the Mars Society, Planetary Society, National Space Society, etc. They are excellent sources of information, provide training and education opportunities, and are ways of meeting people actually involved in space science and technology. This will help you decide where you want to go and what you want to do.

Jon

Whether we become a multi-planet species with unlimited horizons, or are forever confined to Earth will be decided in the twenty-first century amid the vast plains, rugged canyons and lofty mountains of Mars Arthur Clarke
