This late 1990's project was to be directed by Tim Burton and star Nicholas Cage as Superman (GULP!)

Glad it fell apart :p

You are aware Cage is a huge Superman fan, enough so that he named a son Kal-El? Cage's real name is Coppola, as in a nephew of director Francis Ford Coppola. He took Cage as a screen name from the comics character Luke Cage. He was also offered the role of Norman Osborn/Green Goblin in Spiderman but couldn't do it.

Anyhow, here is more info on that film & the casting - evidence that there are worse things than a run of the mill remake :p

Producer: Jon Peters

Original treatment: Kevin Smith

Superman: Nicolas Cage
Lois Lane: Linda Fiorentino
Jimmy Olsen: Chris Rock
Brainiac: Tim Allen
Luthor: Jack Nicholson
Eradicator: David Hyde Pierce
L-Ron (voice): Dwight Ewell

Superman wears the black suit (below) and is only visible in flight as a red-blue blur.  How he does that with a black uniform, I dunno :p

Brainiac blocks the sun, taking his powers, then sends Doomsday to kill Sups.  He also teams with Luthor, who he gives a Chewbacca-ish space-dog. Brainiac has a robot assistant named L-Ron (Hubbard?), who is described as a gay R2D2.

Eradicator, a Kryptonian cybernetic organism, resurrects Superman, but he is now powerless until the sunlight can be turned back on.  To protect Sups and restore some capability Eradicator forms an armor suit from his own body, which is what's shown above.

One improbable thing leads to another, and at the end Sups battles a giant spider - an item Peters recycled in Wild Wild West

I remember hearing that about Cage's fanaticism. But, don't remember about hearing about the Green Goblin role.

Holy crap! Lord save us from ourselves!

It's very likely that by publicly posting this synopsis, you may have prevented a collapse of our entertainment industry by rampaging movie-goers who have simply had enough of hamfisted scripts and incredibly stupid storylines! Well, for those that read your post and take heed and voice their objections in pre-production of said "Films"... which closely resemble the line of gunk in the bottom of my sink I need to throw some bleach on.

Seriously, I lol'd. :)

Wait a sec... Silent Bob? I'm a big Kevin Smith fan, but this ain't his kinda gig. Linda Fiorentino I think would be an AWESOME Lois. But, she's a very, very strong lead and has a hefty screen presence. It'd be 50/50 with her and Cage in a scene... That might be too much chutzpah for one movie screen moment. Chris Rock? Hey, he's not bad but... No way for Jimmy Olsen. Rock has too much bleed-over effect. Any scene that follows him is going to leave audiences thinking about whatever it was he just did. Tim Allen? Brainiac? Lol? His image would break that as soon as we saw him. I don't know much about the Eradicator. So, can't comment on Pierce. But, I will say that if he can escape his Frasier character, it'd be interesting to see. Nicholson? No way. There's no way he can escape The Joker in the milieu. Sure, he'd probably be great. But, the cast would already be adding up to so many "heavies" that Jack's inclusion would tip it over. It'd be like the original Poseidon Adventure meets The Towering Inferno movie except as a one-scene play!

How he does that with a black uniform, I dunno :p

:) A bit of dramatic license with... more reality than suspension of disbelief can stand?

Brainiac blocks the sun, ...

The story description sounds like a bad porn movie. Well, not that there's anything such as a bad porn movie.. But, it sounds like a porn movie trying to go legit and not doing it as successfully as Caligula.. which ain't saying much.
