That's the one. It would also be unnecessarily damaging undamaged tiles.<br /><br />Back to that making things worse or better equation again. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <p><font color="#000080"><em><font color="#000000">But the Krell forgot one thing John. That's the problem if NASA decides it needs to repair the damage fine, but with the media watching every move and decision that they make I am sure that that plays in what they do and that's not the way it should be, the decision should be made by the engineers. On the other hand NASA should make the repair on this type of damage now so they can prove that it could work and that on a future shuttle launch this type of damage can be repaired and a lot of today's questions can be answered and they have the confidence to make repairs. Testing in a lab and wind tunnel is fine but the best test is in an actually flight.

The article on Forbes <i>NASA Does Swift Tests of Shuttle Damage</i> has the engineers not concerned about whether or not Endeavour could land. Rather they were worried Endeavour might be grounded for months or even years undergoing repairs. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <hr style="margin-top:0.5em;margin-bottom:0.5em" />Will Pittenger<hr style="margin-top:0.5em;margin-bottom:0.5em" />Add this user box to your Wikipedia User Page to show your support for the SDC forums: <div style="margin-left:1em">{{User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes/Space.com Account}}</div> </div>

Given how far aft the damage is, would it be safer to use the station's arm rather than the orbiter's? I know that arm is longer. I don't know if one or the other has a position advantage. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <hr style="margin-top:0.5em;margin-bottom:0.5em" />Will Pittenger<hr style="margin-top:0.5em;margin-bottom:0.5em" />Add this user box to your Wikipedia User Page to show your support for the SDC forums: <div style="margin-left:1em">{{User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes/Space.com Account}}</div> </div>

I thought the damage was very small. It's not in an area that should get too hot. I'm pretty sure that the media is trying to make a mountain out of a molehill. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> </div>

I'm pretty sure that the media is trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.....<br /><br />I see two separate issues in the same statement, the damage was very small... <br /><br />It probably is and it will probably not be a problem.<br /><br />I'm pretty sure that the media is trying to make a mountain out of a molehill....<br /><br />I haven't seen the media having that much interest anyway. The point is it offers an opportunity to test procedures and equipment that a lot of money has been spent on. Odds are great that they would land with little, or at best, minor damage.<br /><br />That damage would occur during a repair makes you wonder if we should keep humans involved. Can't you add attachments, like they do in surgery?<br /><br />As clear as the picture was it should be simple to add a squirter. Fill it up to a little below full and move to the next damaged area. If that works Shuttle could fly for a long time.<br /><br />Once damage become a non-issue, and a controllable problem, the remaining Shuttles could fly for a long time. The airframes and crew/cargo areas seem to be aging well, engines are fine. A better Launcher would be nice.<br /><br /> <br /> <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> </div>

Unfortunately, if NASA has to take Endeavour's wing apart to repair structural damages, Endeavour might never fly again. You already stated that another loss of orbiter would end the shuttle program ASAP. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <hr style="margin-top:0.5em;margin-bottom:0.5em" />Will Pittenger<hr style="margin-top:0.5em;margin-bottom:0.5em" />Add this user box to your Wikipedia User Page to show your support for the SDC forums: <div style="margin-left:1em">{{User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes/Space.com Account}}</div> </div>

Well, perhaps the automotive industry has an idea that might translate into a self-healing thermal protection system. They are starting to test paints that when you scratch them, they ooze a chemical that immediately hardens. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <hr style="margin-top:0.5em;margin-bottom:0.5em" />Will Pittenger<hr style="margin-top:0.5em;margin-bottom:0.5em" />Add this user box to your Wikipedia User Page to show your support for the SDC forums: <div style="margin-left:1em">{{User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes/Space.com Account}}</div> </div>

Would you believe that I just talked to the producers of the <i>Tonight Show</i>? They would like you to be a guest host. If you do well, you might take over after they boot Jay Leno. I figure they will pass out plenty of rotten tomatoes for the audience to throw at you. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <hr style="margin-top:0.5em;margin-bottom:0.5em" />Will Pittenger<hr style="margin-top:0.5em;margin-bottom:0.5em" />Add this user box to your Wikipedia User Page to show your support for the SDC forums: <div style="margin-left:1em">{{User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes/Space.com Account}}</div> </div>

I figured they would take the wing apart in that situation because of the possibility of causing the wing to collapse under its own weight when those structural components are removed.<br /><br />BTW: Has an orbiter ever returned with similar damage? <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <hr style="margin-top:0.5em;margin-bottom:0.5em" />Will Pittenger<hr style="margin-top:0.5em;margin-bottom:0.5em" />Add this user box to your Wikipedia User Page to show your support for the SDC forums: <div style="margin-left:1em">{{User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes/Space.com Account}}</div> </div>

I saw the "gouged tile" model of the made on the 3-D printer. That must be one heckuva printer. My printer jams up if the paper is a little bit crooked or the corners are folded. It could never spit out something that big. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <p> </p><p> </p> </div>

I don't believe those printers work like your home printer. The ones I have seen pictures of work by using a laser to chemically modify a fluid. The fluid that is exposed to the laser solidifies. There is nothing to "jam." <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <hr style="margin-top:0.5em;margin-bottom:0.5em" />Will Pittenger<hr style="margin-top:0.5em;margin-bottom:0.5em" />Add this user box to your Wikipedia User Page to show your support for the SDC forums: <div style="margin-left:1em">{{User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes/Space.com Account}}</div> </div>

Must've missed that one Bill. I did see them carving a replica out of a "blank" tile using a router with CNC. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <p> </p><p> </p><p>----------------------------------------------------------------- </p><p>Wanna see this site looking like the old SDC uplink?</p><p>Go here to see how: <strong>SDC Eye saver </strong>  </p> </div>

I have a question. If NASA management decides not to make a repair but the crew think they should make the tile repair what would NASA do? After all they are the ones whose lives are at risk. How does crew input work into NASA's decision?

"Can you imagine the up raw if GOD FORBID something goes wrong during landing and NASA does not make the repair. "<br /><br />There would be the same upraw if nasa did attempt a repair and it failed. The media will be asking, "did the reapir make it worse"<br /><br />Only way Nasa can look good out of this is bringing the shuttle down safely.<br /><br /><br />
