Well, that is fairly accurate, SpaceKiwi. I was hoping he'd do that if I just mentioned that it was available. (And he did.) I hooked up my laptop to the TV so we could watch it on a nice big screen while eating dinner. Now he's done one better and made it into a DVD so I can watch it without booting up the computer!

I was pretty pathetically eager to watch it once I got it. My husband was very tolerant. I think he had been expecting that.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

They need to get Tom Baker again, if he's still around and not too old, to me he was the only Dr. Who.

Tom Baker is indeed still around. He recently appeared in the abyssmal "Dungeons & Dragons" (though any failure of the movie is not attributable to him; the script and the director were apparently the main problems). He also did some commercial spots for New Zealand attired as the Doctor. He's still got the same eyes and same toothy grin, but his hair has gone completely white -- it's a little startling to the fan.

I'd like to get my hands on a program he apparently did a few years ago where he played Sherlock Holmes -- *and* Moriarity. He's a huge Holmes fan. But I don't know whether the program was done on television, art-house film, or what, and I don't know whether it's ever been available on VHS or DVD. It would be neat to see, though.

Somebody should do a new Holmes movie and cast him in it so I can see his performance as Holmes.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

He is also a bit chubby these days! I haven't seen him as Holmes and Moriarty but he did a very good Holmes in a version of "The hound of the Baskervilles" about 20 years ago. About 15 years ago he was a very good Puddleglum in an adaptation of "The silver chair". He is about to appear as a new regular in the latest series of "Monarch of the Glen".

Jon

Whether we become a multi-planet species with unlimited horizons, or are forever confined to Earth will be decided in the twenty-first century amid the vast plains, rugged canyons and lofty mountains of Mars Arthur Clarke

Hmmm, Tom Baker was probably the quintessential Doc, though Jon Pertwee would run him close I think. Tom had the wonderful scarf, and Jon had the car! I guess that's the great thing about allowing the lead character to be regenerated periodically, it gives you new and interesting treatments each time.

I don't recall Tom Baker ever doing adverts here dressed as the Doctor, but I will defer to the Time Lady's supreme knowledge of all things Who on that one!

I do vaguely remember him as Sherlock Holmes, though I suspect it is the one you are talking about Jon. Great news to hear he is joining the Monarch cast. I am a late discoverer of that show, and now enjoy it immensely. I will say they seem to have a veritable revolving door with the cast though. No sooner have you got used to a new character than 'fessssssst', they're outta there!

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

I have a few episodes of "Medics" on tape. It was a fun one for me to watch, because I'm a huge Whovian and I'm also a Highlander fan -- and it has a prominent recurring actor from both. Tom Baker, whom we all know and love as the 4th Doctor, and Peter Wingfield, who played Methos on Highlander.

Actually, I quite enjoy a spirited game of spot-the-Doctor-Who-actor. Medics also features the guy who played the Marshall in "The Armageddon Factor", in a recurring role as a hospital administrator. There may also be more; British television is of course far more prone to appearances by Who actors, for obvious reasons.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Yeah, sometimes I see people from The Young Ones, like on Ab Fab, it's always interesting, seems like they have a tight little universe over there.

I once started tallying up "Doctor Who numbers". They were sort of like Bacon numbers, except that instead of counting the number of links (via IMDB) to Kevin Bacon, they counted the number of shared actors and/or major production staff were shared between a series and Doctor Who. I used to have a bunch of lists, but on my PC at work it seems I only have a partial list, with just one franchise listed. "Highlander" nets a figure of 18 (if you include the movies, which lets you include such notables as Michael Jayston -- the Valeyard -- and the very famous costume designer James Acheson). I haven't tallied up anybody from the new Who series, though, and I'm missing all the lists I made for other shows.

I think "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" got the highest ranking of any that I looked at, which really isn't a surprise at all. It was practically produced down the hall from Dr Who, and its very creator has a major Who link!

Surprising shows with a strong Dr Who link include MacGyver. Did you know that MacGyver was created by the guy who invented the Daleks, Terry Nation?

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

I did not know that. Was never a big McGyver fan though, not a big Hollwood production fan in general, I'll take a low budget Brit show with lots of feeling and imagination any day.

Oh, and here's a review that Whovians will enjoy:

New Who impresses ex-Doctor McCoy by Sylvester McCoy

Short version: he liked it. (He especially liked not being in it, so he could actually enjoy watching it for a change.)

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"
