You may or may not have heard about this probe launched by the British Rocket Group, but it's called Guinevere. It's Britain's second attempt to land on the Red Planet, after the failure of Beagle 2. It's been travelling for some time, and it's due to land on Sunday, with live footage from the surface of Mars to be broadcast in the UK by the BBC at 7PM on Christmas Day. It's very exciting, and you can follow along at the mission website:

British Rocket Group - Guinevere One

Of course, it's entirely possible that something quite unexpected will happen instead. Especially since the prime minister behind this project is not Tony Blair but Harriet Jones, who rocketed to the top post after the mysterious deaths of the Prime Minister and the entire Cabinet, followed by the still-unexplained destruction of 10 Downing Street. There are rumors that an alien invasion was responsible for all of that, along with some cosmetic damage to Big Ben, and that the government is covering this all up for some unexplained reason. But that's nonsense, of course. Along with the rumors of a strange doctor who appears throughout history, accompanied by an obsolete Metropolitan Police call box....

(BTW, for those who did not follow the last season of Doctor Who, the BBC has been conducting viral marketing of the series. The Guinevere website is registered to the BBC, and the show airing at 7PM on Sunday is Doctor Who: The Christmas Invasion. The space probe is, of course, fictional.)

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"
