Well, both are the exact same rank. However, certain technical MOS's would become Specialists instead of hard-stripes (mine, 24C20, included). Why, I don't know.

Best answer I once was told (by an E-6) was "Specialists don't have to babysit troops."

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Good point. NCOs lead troops, Specs do the technical stuff. Makes sense.

Of course the dippy thing about it, talk about a distinction without a difference, is that I did have to "babysit troops." Among other things, that's what a Section Chief does.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

I've never understood why the Army still keeps the E-4 Specialist rank. In today's "Everyman a Rifleman" Army the concept of SPC is outdated. They need to get rid of it and just go straight to corpral. Despite corpral being the historical transition between PFC and SGT it is rarely seen these day. Most people just go straight from SPC to SGT without making the traditional stop at CPL.

So, again we are defeated. Beats me. Tradition? Dunno.

Of course the "Every Man a Rifle Man" concept is and has been the same all along. I can't emphasize how many times I was reminded that 11-B was our first and Primary MOS.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

I forgot once, and then the Army decided to remind me. Next thing I know, I'm sucking in dust in Iraq. However, in recent months I've come to find a huge diffrence in the mindset between combat and noncombat arms.

So, again we are defeated. Yeah, I do understand.

To this day, I:

Don't like to be snuck up on.
Have a very well defined sense of my personal space, and I only let a few trusted people into it.
Have insomnia.
Get angry in about 0.006 Femtoseconds.
Walk very quietly, such that I can sneak right up on almost anyone.

Etc.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Which leads me to a question that actually conforms to the topic of this thread.

Do Starfleet personnel suffer from PTSD?

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Hard to have PTSD when you're dead. Just ask all those "red shirts".

Which leads me to a question that actually conforms to the topic of this thread.

Do Starfleet personnel suffer from PTSD?

Well... given that ship's counselors were introduced in STNG, it figures the answer would have to be "yes."

I suspect Picard experienced major post-traumatic stress for awhile after Riker and crew recovered him from the Borg. Memories of having been overtaken by the hive mind probably kept him jumpy for awhile.

And I seem to recall an episode in which Picard was subjected to torture.

Yep, Picard had major PTSD to deal with -- and deal with it he did, with help from Troi.
Just tell the truth and let the chips fall...

Yeah. I even saw a clip from one once, years ago. Marina Sirtis did soft-core Porn for a time.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

This is supposedly not true, but I truly did see a porn flick with her in it.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if some spin control and buying of rights to some inconvenient flicks has taken place since.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Best line??? Abassadory dinner in Undiscovered Country when everyone stars quoting Shakespeare and the
Klingon Commander says- "We need breathing room, Captain!" to which Kirk replies "Earth, Hitler, 1941!"

Well... I think Marina Sirtis did a few scenes that were sort of racy -- but not porn by a long shot.

She was topless a time or two. But she didn't do-the-nasty on screen, I don't believe.
Just tell the truth and let the chips fall...
