This was sent to me through the mail by "The Shadow" and I thought I would share it with you.

**PM posted without permission and against forum policy - deleted**

Note this was the first warning by a moderator I have officially received on posting images size since I became a member 4 months after space.com started this message board years ago. I have been asked before by a few people to reduce the size of my images, so I reduced the size to what I thought would fit and not disrupt the text posted thoughts. My browser works fine without disrupting the text with the current size of the images I have posted at 850 pixels. Because of this new development I will drastically reduce posting images here because I cant see reducing the size of the original image down any more then what I am doing right now.

Thanks to all those people who have supported me in the past and who still give there support today.

Ron
Ron Bennett

**PM posted without permission and against forum policy - deleted**

this is probably one of the most amazing and valuable threads on the entire internet right now

mods on the board are willing to restrict this or risk having it dry up or shut down because they are worried about "browser display widths"??

wow. thats really quite ... sad really

.

I agree. I read the original PM, and it's tone and wording was completely inappropriate, and I think TheShadow ought to apologize to RLB.

Our mods need to be much more professional in their behavior.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I really, really, really miss the "first unread post" function.

"...try one of the other science boards, and let people know where you are posting."

Curious...are there other science boards that allow large images?

I'd also like to make the point that some of the MER images can be several times 100k in full resolution. Because of the 100k limitation, this board is not the best way to view these images.

As TheShadow pointed out in another thread, a link to a full size image is not such a big deal, especially when one has a website specifically for MER imagery.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

"I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical. This was form note, with a number of recepients. Even if one were to object to the tone, TheShadow is well within his duties as a moderator to make such a request. Furthermore, posting the content of privates from anyone, in the forum, is not acceptable, which is why this was deleted.

Jon

Whether we become a multi-planet species with unlimited horizons, or are forever confined to Earth will be decided in the twenty-first century amid the vast plains, rugged canyons and lofty mountains of Mars Arthur Clarke

Jon, I agree it is bad form to post a PM (I never said otherwise).

Yes, the PM was within the mod's role to send. of course, they are the mods. My own opinion (not that it matters) is that I do think that RLB's image sizes are OK. They think otherwise, and while I may disagree, it is their forum to moderate.

That said, I think the PM was poorly worded and borderline rude. It could've had carried the same message with a bit more finesse. That's particularly what bothered me.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I really, really, really miss the "first unread post" function.

Rlb, I'm very happy you reconsidered. You are too content-heavy a member to arbitrarily lose.

Perhaps everyone should take a few days off at the beach. Since my last post was deleted entirely and I can’t say anything on this board anymore without censor, note there were no flaming or verbal insults in my last thread either just the words from the PM, “The Shadow,” per batum that I posted, I have deleted all my post in this thread. That should facilitate and stop all the mob moderator violence and censors here.

I fixed the problem in this thread and will fix the problem in the other threads where I have posted.

"The Shadow" sent me messages while I had "no" marked to receiving private messages in my home personal folder - since you sent me a private message without my permission isn't this a violation of the TOSS therefore I should have the right to respond to any unwanted messages without it being a violation of the TOSS.....

I don't want any private messages sent my way from any moderator. You got something to say, say it here, where I can respond in kind without you censoring my work..........

Ron Bennett

right, why is there now an administrative issue with larger mars images? WTF? the images need to be giant to show the great majesty of the martian plains and hills.

to knitpick over the over-scrolling that needs to be done to see the MER images is just --c'mon. are we allowed to burp or use the bathroom without a hall pass?

btw, pm's should be kept private. else post in the public forums.
*** inflamatory comment voluntarily edited

bonzelite, silyene I totally agree with you guys on this. What rlb2 and swampcat did to the mars images truly brought mars home for me. When these two posted the color pictures it was one of the greatest threads going on this website. I can't believe that the complaint here is over the size of the images. Isn't this a space forum? To me there isn't a better place than this website to post these images. I think that "the shadow" needs to reconsider this. If rlb2 doesn't post anymore images it will be a HUGE loss for space.com and the people who come here to see them. There is more I would like to say about this issue, but for the sake of sensorship I better bite my tongue. rlb2 I have totally enjoyed and greatly appreciate the work you have done with the Mars images and I thank you, I hope that you continue to do this in the future. I hope that you and especially the mod's understand that there are alot of people here that really got something out of your posting of these photos.

exactly. this forum is becoming as fun as staring at a cardboard box. many of the colourful characters have either all been banned, or they have left out of complete disappointment with the increasingly staid politics of these boards. one of my favorite long-term threads has been the mars images one, and the saturn/moons one. now these are taking a dump? why? to what end? to prove that policies are enforced? ------who cares, what a barrage of yawning and boredom.

i think i will go watch some paint dry now. wake me up before you go go.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and your support, without that support here on this board as noted
above the image width would have been restricted to below 700 pixels for people who want to post full-size
mages here. I was in the process of looking for other places to post my images besides my web site that
would have allowed larger sized images. I welcome this new policy adopted recently as outlined below.

The Shadow

We have decided on a policy for images that should satisfy everyone.

Ordinary threads. There will be a limit of 800 pixels wide. For now, there will be no width limit on Image
threads. A hint for dialog on Image Threads. If you are going to post a long message, use a manual carriage
return at the end of each line of about 90 characters. This will keep your message within the limits of the
window and make it easier for others to read. Do this even if there are no wide images in the thread because
someone may post one later on.

http://uplink.space.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=sciastro&Number=510159&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=0&fpart=

I posted text that way when I posted large images for years - it’s a little more work but it keeps everything
readable.

2P199870353EL5M1.7
Ron Bennett
