Mars gullies question for the planetary geologists:

Have the numerous, cited, geologically recent gullies seen on Mars been catalogued and mapped?

If so, are many of these gullies within specific basins/areas and in close proximity to one another?

As many of these crater gullies seem to originate (or be associated) with coarser grained clastics, have there been any attempts to lithologically correlate this strata from site to site?

It would seem that if said coarse-grained rocks were potential aquifers (and the source for the gully erosion and subsequent alluvial fan-like deposition), then mapping of these clastic sequences from outcrops would be important from numerous standpoints.

Just a few thoughts from an old petroleum geologist ...

gr8 work rlb2, thank you for the link. What is the white stuff in the "tracks" pic from 6/26/06 -- ice?

I'm a recovering optimist - things could be better.

Thanks

What is the white stuff in the "tracks" pic from 6/26/06 -- ice?

I’m sure its already been identified as some sort of salts, what particular type I don't know. It is a nightmare
trying to decipher the spectro readings unless you are very well schooled in it and can correlate JPL's images
with an overlaying of the spectro readings site?

I personally don't trust mini-TESS for finding certain elements such as water ice, etc. I am hoping some expert in
this field who has done their homework will anounce some kind of remarkable finding at a Mars conference and
question the spectro readings findings we are getting back from the MER rovers, I haven't seen that yet.

2P203954867EL5M1

Ron Bennett

The white stuff, salts, are at both sites. Here is a recent image of Opportunities track marks.

1P202930858EL5M1.5

Ron Bennett

Interesting how the tires tracks are "cut" to such a fine edge. Something sticky going on there.

Something sticky going on there.

Something does appear to make the top layer a solid thin sheet???

Ha. Who knows maybe the apparent thin layer is a varnish like coating of the surface from dead microbial life
forms, or dead bacterial mats. Wouldn’t that be a kick if years latter we find out that the rovers have been
treading on dead Martian life forms all this time without us realizing it?

Dr Perry said: "If silica exists in varnish-like coatings in Martian deserts or caves, then it may
entomb ancient microbes or chemical signatures of previous life there, too. Desert varnish forms over
tens of thousands of years and the deepest, oldest layers in the varnish may have formed in very different
conditions to the shallowest, youngest layer.

"These lustrous chroniclers of the local surroundings can provide a window back in time. Martian desert
varnish would contain a fascinating chronology of the Martian setting," he added.

http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewpr.html?pid=20237

1P202400127EL5M1
Ron Bennett
