Hey dfrank. Welcome to the boards.

In reply to:

Why does NASA classify images?

The simple answer is to preserve national security.

In fact, NASA classifies a great deal and there's no reason to think that images aren't a part of that equation. I can imagine classifications on images of certain debris after an accident, I can imagine classifications on certain high resolution photography of certain ground locations in CONUS, I can imagine low-level classifications on certain environmentally sensitive regions (politics is politics, after all).

The real question: can you research what the alleged classified photo was? Can you find it and show us what you were talking about? Then, maybe, we can talk about it.

Realize, though, that if it's both legitimate and on the web, you'll probably be stepping into an ongoing investigation. After all, if it's classified, and you know about it, then somebody leaked it – and that's probably a bad thing. We don't let bad things pass. Remember that controversial NSA warrantless eavesdropping program? It doesn't matter if it's actually legal or not, it's still classified. Blowing its cover may be more illegal than actually running it.

If the issue is important enough, the fact is: it's above the law. That might make you uncomfortable, but it's the cold, hard truth. Don't believe me, ask President Bush and AG Gonzales (though FISA might disagree). That surveillance program was watching for terrorists. That's pretty important.

...Now, for a second, think about what these alleged "classified NASA photos" might show. Ask yourself: if they're legit, could what they represent have some impact on the security, economy or foreign relations of the United States? If we can stretch "wartime" rules to cherry-picking your phone calls for terrorist connections, might "wartime" rules also be applicable to i

Mere precedent is a dangerous source of authority.

-Andrew Jackson (1767-1845)
