Hey dfrank. Welcome to the boards.

In reply to:

Why does NASA classify images?

The simple answer is to preserve national security.

In fact, NASA classifies a great deal and there's no reason to think that images aren't a part of that equation. I can imagine classifications on images of certain debris after an accident, I can imagine classifications on certain high resolution photography of certain ground locations in CONUS, I can imagine low-level classifications on certain environmentally sensitive regions (politics is politics, after all).

The real question: can you research what the alleged classified photo was? Can you find it and show us what you were talking about? Then, maybe, we can talk about it.

Realize, though, that if it's both legitimate and on the web, you'll probably be stepping into an ongoing investigation. After all, if it's classified, and you know about it, then somebody leaked it – and that's probably a bad thing. We don't let bad things pass. Remember that controversial NSA warrantless eavesdropping program? It doesn't matter if it's actually legal or not, it's still classified. Blowing its cover may be more illegal than actually running it.

If the issue is important enough, the fact is: it's above the law. That might make you uncomfortable, but it's the cold, hard truth. Don't believe me, ask President Bush and AG Gonzales (though FISA might disagree). That surveillance program was watching for terrorists. That's pretty important.

...Now, for a second, think about what these alleged "classified NASA photos" might show. Ask yourself: if they're legit, could what they represent have some impact on the security, economy or foreign relations of the United States? If we can stretch "wartime" rules to cherry-picking your phone calls for terrorist connections, might "wartime" rules also be applicable to i

Mere precedent is a dangerous source of authority.

-Andrew Jackson (1767-1845)

"It's hard to be visionary and credible at the same time."
~Marc Millis, NASA BPP Manager

Ain't that the truth!
I have some very interesting theories on how to use gravity for propulsion, try to get some one to listen might be more difficult than building it.
I have seen your ideas very interesting.
Yes, it is my opinion. I work with satellite, airborne, and ground imagery on a near daily
basis. So my opinion is informed by professional training and experience.

So is mine.

For the prime purpose of HiRISE, panchromatic is quite adequate.
We have plenty of true colour images from the surface and of the surface. You can find some of them at this site

No one can claim they have true color images

It’s not hard for those for whom the image is collected, the project scientists. They are the ones who develop the questions that need answering

You don’t understand, I am a scientist,

Dfrank

Jon is a scientist too so you two should have some interesting discussions. At least I think that's what you said in your post. Please take Jon's advice regarding quoting others in your posts. It makes it very hard to follow who said what.

Use [ i] to start and [/ i] end a quote and it will look like this: He said...

Use [ yellow] to start and [ /yellow] to end a quote and it will look like this: He said..

(You'll need to remove the spaces to make it work.)

As Jon noted, the FAQs address the issues of the codes.
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will to strive, to seek, to find and not to yeild. - Tennyson

I am a little old to do colors. Lets just slow down and take it a step at a time. I can honestly say I am glad to be here. We can start where you want.

Just give each other time to respond. Science takes some thinking

Dfrank
Guys,

I may make this look easy, remember I’m 97. Cut me a little slack. The screen can look a little weird some time.

Dfrank
I'm asking you to be considerate of the other posters in the thread, the individuals you are responding to, and anyone else who would like to read the content. Simply let them know what specific quote you are responding to - and where their words end and yours start.

Use dashes. Anything.

He said:

Blah-blah-blah

--------

I say:

Blah-blah-blah
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will to strive, to seek, to find and not to yeild. - Tennyson

Blueberries are a gross over simplification, I would hope we would get down to the process.

Dfrank
Well, Blueberries have long since been ascribed to mineral accretion. This is a rather dead issue here.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

A quick point here.

You posted a photo as an illustration of your point; as supporting evidence, if you will.

A member asked for the original source image - the image number of the raw data.

A perfectly reasonable request.

In accordance with the "rules of engagement" here at SDC, keep in mind it is incumbent on you to provide that information to the individual requesting it.

It is not his responsibility to visit another message board and "Ask for Mann." It's your responsibility to obtain that information and provide it. Apparently, you knew where to get it in the first place - you managed to post a copy.

Please provide the information as requested.

Thanks.

Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will to strive, to seek, to find and not to yeild. - Tennyson
