Unfortunately I feel that Outland will end up being the movie that most accurately predicts our near term future in space.
Bob DeWoody

My fear is that it will be "Capricorn I". My hope is that it will be "Salvage".

Vote Libertarian

I'm with you: Outland. Dark, gritty, all too human, and downright nasty.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

Outland is pretty good but I think we would also get to the point of colonies with families, gardens and some very beautiful architecture that just couldnt be built in the gravity of earth. I cant think of a remotely serious movie that portrays this though.

In reply to:

You must mean Salvage 1

Hmm. Could have sworn that the movie was named "Salvage" and that the follow on TV series was called "Salvage I". I don't think that the movie was originally planned to be a pilot. After all, the TV series didn't do much with the rocket.

Vote Libertarian

That's the parallel universe where John Travolta becomes the President of the USA.

Yes, a parallel universe hopefully immediately followed by it's collapse back into a Monobloc.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

I think Kirk and Spock might be willing to sacrifice another Enterprise to keep that one from happening.

Any chance our Travolta could be trapped in that Monobloc ?

As for future "space" films... I'm still scratching my head. Blade Runner could be all too true as might Gataca but they're really not about people in space.

-----------------------------------------------------

Ask not what your Forum Software can do do on you,

Ask it to, please for the love of all that's Holy, STOP !

I hadnt heard of it myself so I just googled it and found that link. There was some other non-space movie called salvage. Possibly there was some renaming to avoid a clash? Anyway thanks for mentioning it. I'll keep an eye out for it.

I think "The Time Machine" remake where we blow up the moon by dicking around with it too much and giant moon chunks crash into the earth..

yes, that parallel univ. where Tom Cruise is the best and most popular star of ALL time. Now, that would be a univ. to avoid.

I also seem to remember the astronaut in the lander lifting off -- with the descent engine. That was how the lady was able to prevent liftoff -- by grabbing the landing strut.

Will Pittenger
Add this user box to your Wikipedia User Page to show your support for the SDC forums:
{{User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes/Space.com Account}}

Mainstream science is our best stab at what real is.

Minority report was notable for those interesting user interfaces but Im still hankering for a good space movie.

Why HAL felt the need to kill them I don't know. They knew about the real mission. The only crew members that did not know were Bowman and Poole.

Will Pittenger
Add this user box to your Wikipedia User Page to show your support for the SDC forums:
{{User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes/Space.com Account}}

In 1967 I was starting my 1st year in college, the moon landings were 2 years away and "2001 A Space Odessy" seemed entirely plausible, at least the technology part. here it is 2007 and we only have a manned space platform nowhere near what the 2001 space station was conceived to be, no moon base and no manned vehicle capablr of interplanetary flight. It is rather dissappointing to us who grew up in the 60's and 70's that our progress with manned space flight has been so slow. At least our robotic space exploration has made great strides and discoveries.
Bob DeWoody

I'll toss Silent Running into the mix. Despite some of it's flaws, it seem somewhat a plausible future.

Rather tough to come up with a movie set in space not involving an alien presence.

"If something's hard to do, then it's not worth doing." - Homer Simpson

I love "Silent Running." One of my favorite movies. Those were the first "humanized" non-human (not bilaterally symmetrical anthropoids) looking robots I ever saw in a movie. Huey, Duey and Luey are R2D2's ancestors.
I put on my robe and wizard hat...
