You're not going to get much help with all the screaming and yelling, IMO

But the Krell forgot one thing John. just ask the questions here, that's one reason the board is here. Though I'd ask them over in the "Ask an Astronomer" forum. This one is more of just general discussion of astronomy.

But, this way you'll almost always get an answer, and there are usually several people contributing to help keep mistakes down. Many members here are very, very good and have actual training in the field.

When in doubt about an answer, lean towards the answers the MCT give or agree with.

MCT: Mission Control Team members, the informal mods and assistants of the science forums. We were chosen for long term and quality contribution, along with general knowledge of scientific fields. We're not always right, but we tend to be

Oh, and keep the capitals to a minimum, it's a bit hard on the eyes. Color is usually reserved for emphasis as well, or to designate quoted text instead of using the [ quote] [/ quote] tags. Basically, its genereal ettiquete as loud colors and capitals are the visual equivelant to yelling during casual conversation.

--------------------SaiphMOD@gmail.com -------------------

"This is my Timey Wimey Detector. Goes "bing" when there's stuff. It also fries eggs at 30 paces, wether you want it to or not actually. I've learned to stay away from hens: It's not pretty when they blow" -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Agreed, an entire post in caps is the textual equivalent of getting bludgeoned. By a blunt instrument...

I wish I could remember
But my selective memory
Won't let me - Mark Oliver Everett

last bit of advice: Multiple postings of the same thread is unneccessary, even if it's in different forums. Please refrain from doing so (accidents happen, but you've got the same thread titled "so many questions" over in AA too).

[And the user name is nothing if not honest! ]

Hi blunt, welcome to sdc! As it turns out, if you're looking for answers on those subjects, you've come to the right place. These people know their stuff, and just as importantly, people here have learned not to post on things they don't know about. Oh, they can try, but they will get slapped down pretty hard and pretty quick.

The quality of these boards isn't so much in the breadth and depth of the community's knowledge as such. Both those attributes are very much present. But the thing that sets this place apart IMO is the likelihood that if you ask something really specialized, there's a good chance that somewhere in this group of folks, someone knows that subject backwards and forwards and diagonal. If you formulate a good question, you have a pretty darn good chance at getting a top-notch answer. Not always, but quite often. It's a very fun thing to be a part of. Addictive, actually.

It sounds like you want to obtain the services of an individual for private consultation, and that's not the way it usually works here. Is your request in regards to a commercial, proprietary endeavor or something along those lines? There's usually nothing wrong with commercial stuff of course; but based on history, most of are probably wondering what your motivation here is.

not to be really nitpicky but:
In reply to:

if you ask something really specialized, there's a good chance that somewhere in this group of folks, someone knows that subject backwards and forwards and diagonal.

That is a breadth and depth of knowledge. You ask it, we've got it covered (that's breadth) and backwards/forwards/diagnal...that's depth.

So...umm...I'm confused by that paragraph.

I like it when my nits are picked. Oh wait, did that come out wrong?

Yeah I know. You want a tortured paragraph? Try this:

Two things in my defense: I wanted to use the phrase 'per se' but that always seems to lead to confusion, so I said 'as such'. Not that that answers the objection but it sets it up. The second thing is the fine distinction between a depth that can be counted on to go 'this much' deep across the breadth of subjects to be expected, and the depth that either goes 'a whole bunch more that just that' within that breadth, or, and more to the point here, into a stunning amount of depth on a subject that would not be expected to within the breadth.

hehehehe, clear as mud, right?

IOW, A) a question can get asked about a core space subject and a guy will go "yes, well I just ran a computer simulation of that just last week and here's a piddly little detail you missed - to me that extreme depth goes beyond the expected everyday breadth and depth. B) A question can be asked, maybe off topic within a thread for example, about some subject, like oh I don't know, antiques or something, and poof up pops some long-time lurker that knows everything about the object. Not a core subject but the diversity of this community provides that one expert out of nowhere.

OK, I think I've got it at last:

It's like a broad and deep pond of knowledge but both the bottom and the perimeter are very irregular. (Whew, am I off the hook now?)
