Threshold, Invasion, Night Stalker, and Surface, four new scifi/fantasy shows on the big networks. I have only watched a couple of episodes of Nightstalker, not the greatest but still interesing and creepy enough to keep me on board for now. the others are either getting good reviews or have appealing premises, so I was wondering if any of the scifi crowd here had recommendations to share about these shows, or any other new ones for that matter.

The only laws of matter are those which our minds must fabricate, and the only laws of mind are fabricated for it by matter.
--- James Clerk Maxwell

I like them all. I can't say that they don't have there problems, but all in all they are decent entertainment.

you watch them all? and I thought I watched too much TV. actually, I do, but my quota is filled with other shows than the ones listed above. however, I'm looking for recommendations on the four I listed in case there is an opening in my TV watching list. which there will be now that I think about it, with Firefly reruns ending.

The only laws of matter are those which our minds must fabricate, and the only laws of mind are fabricated for it by matter.
--- James Clerk Maxwell

Believe it or not, here in one of the top 100 US TV markets, over the air broadcasting of Star Trek: Enterprise has just started.

And in the interests of continuity, rather than start at the beginning, they started with the Augments episodes, the twits.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

Invasion- Thumbs up, I like it. Although they really draw the thing out (I have watched all the episodes and still know virtually nothing about the aliens - or even who exactly is an alien). But I still like it….as long as there is at least a minor payoff at the end of the season for all the time I have invested in watching it (Babylon 5 strung out its mysteries like a string of pearls - with at least some mystery (conflict) being solved at the end of every season, which then leads the viewer towards a new mystery or objective, until the show eventually ends with everything being revealed).

Threshold - ?

Night Stalker - ?

Surface - Abyss/Invasion rip off? ……It’s on NBC. I haven’t seen it because I have problems trusting that network after all the crap it has put out recently.

BSG- Can’t wait for the new season!

Stargate- past its prime? Although, I do like some of the new cast and the new plot.
Invasion - takes too long and still nothing happens, main characters are forgetable
surface - same thing - I also don't believe gov't would try to cover it up like
this or be able to with the beasts washing ashore, etc, ridiculous

Threshold- pretty good, the chick on there is a babe too.

Night Stalker - not bad, a reporter invstigates supernatural killings, but he's the only one who believes it even after his co-workers witness this stuff they don't seem to start taking him seriously...

Stargate - I wish O-'neill could come back, but still good, maybe best show I've
ever witnessed, longest running sci-fi series now ever I think, renewed for a tenth yr! I think Atlantis might be better now.

Numbers(not really scifi) - great show

Ghost Whisperer- I'm pleasantly surprised by this show, I had a bias against JL Hewitt because she ruined some movies I saw with her (e.g. the tuxedo)
but the show is hard to watch without it being a tear jerker and I have to admit she's a good actress

Smallville - still pretty good I think - but same thing pretty much, kryptonite
freak of the week vs. Clark

Veronica Mars (also not scifi :p) - surprisingly good plots and one of the better mystery shows I've seen in awhile

New BSG - Not very impressed with it. I'm biased toward the original - which was much better. I don't understand the need for newer shows these days to 'make friends' with the bad guys :p Also don't know why they had to make starbuck a chick (and boomer), but it's improving lately....

You should also check out My Name is Earl/ the office

I've tried to watch Invasion and Threshold. I can't seem to get into them. I've had a staple diet of Star Trek for too long I guess.

A little off topic, but I do like the old sci fi movies as well, Day The Earth Stood Still, I like the old Buck Rogers from the 30's. My wife bought me a CD of those.. Buck Rogers that is.

The new shows don't catch my fancy. The only sci-fi shows that I watch is SG1, Atlantis, and Battlestar.. If it is not space, I'm not watching it........

What about The 4400? Anyone watched that and got an opinion? It has been showing here, I watch every week, but I haven't decided one way or the other whether it's good or not. Perhaps that is my answer though.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

I've been watching The 4400 and IMO it's getting better, some sort of story arc is building instead of abductee-of-the-week-with-new-powers episodes. I thought the show never got past the mini series eps but while back bumped into the torrents of real season one, a pleasant surpise.

Anyone miss Carnivale? I liked it even though usually watch just pure scifi. Revelations too but that's mainly because of McElhone

I just finished watching last Invasion episodes, watched them all almost in a row. Didn't know such series existed before this thread, thanks for the tip! I liked the show, nice remake of Invasion of the Bodysnatchers. They must give Donald Sutherland at least some cameo role Looking forward how the story developes.

Trying 'Surface' next.

are you scouting for me then? well thank you look forward to your further comments then, although as I said it is likely I wont ever make time for any of these shows, oh well

The only laws of matter are those which our minds must fabricate, and the only laws of mind are fabricated for it by matter.
--- James Clerk Maxwell

thanks. Nightstalker is the only I'm watching so far. I like creepy but it is getting repetitive as you say. the original had more variety, actual monsters and aliens now and then, not just ghosts and demonic forces. I'm glad you gave the more positive review to Surface, since that one has instrigued me the most (I like sea adventures/mysteries)

"I don't like it being concerned with marital/family problems of characters more than it is with aliens/science."

yeah, seems some of these new shows feel compelled to have a strong drama element. the networks throw around this term a lot, drama sells they think.

The only laws of matter are those which our minds must fabricate, and the only laws of mind are fabricated for it by matter.
--- James Clerk Maxwell

I like Ben Browder. I like Claudia Black. I like Beau Bridges. I like Lexa Doig. I like Louis Gossett, Jr. I like WIlliam B. Davis.

I don't like Stargate SG1 much anymore.

I like Atlantis much more than when it first came out.

I watch BSG. I hated it at first. But after I got over the resentment at the difference between it and the original, I started to think it was okay. It's something to do on a Friday night when I'm not playing poker.

I had a look at Surface. Stupid. I watched the original Noght Stalker as a kid. That was Darren McGavin's role. I won't watch the new one. As I have no great love for the 3 major networks, the only thing I watch on them is football, so I've not watched an of the other shows.

"2012.. Night Stalker got cancelled after half a dozen episodes. I didnt think it was *that* bad, but it did feel repetitive and unoriginal. the McGavin series had more monster variety and was all standalone episodes. this one was all spirits/demons and some big X-file-like story arc which didnt do much for it. ironic how the show failed while trying to imitate a sucessful show inspired by Night Stalker, instead of Night Stalker itself.

The only laws of matter are those which our minds must fabricate, and the only laws of mind are fabricated for it by matter.
--- James Clerk Maxwell

I know what you mean with BSG. At first I only got PO’d when watching it, and only watched it to see how they would “screw it up even more.” But I got over it. Now I cant’ wait to see what happens to that Admiral.

As for Stargate, I felt that show should have been canceled before it even came to sci-fi. Unless they become a little more coherent and stop talking about “the ancients” all the time, then I say dump it.

I like Atlantis more now than at first, but I still think that they need to come up with something better than the wraith. Also, the writing could be a little more original - one episode was a blatant rip off of a prior SG-1 episode…it involved a computer virus that infected their system and downloaded itself into another unsuspecting object so that I became hard to get rid of.

Also, I’ve noticed that the character “colonel Sheppard” on Atlantis acts and talks a lot like MacGyver’s character on SG-1

I really like 'Surface". The main girl character is a babe & 1/2 and the premise got me hooked. Of course, I got hooked on Enterprise and paid for UPN on Dish network just to see it. I never saw the first 6 episodes or so. Needless to say, I dropped UPN since they cancelled Enterprise.
Back to 'Surface'- good show, really Spielberg at his best, type stuff. I won't spoil it for you by telling you the latest, but I liked the notion that the huge bottom dwellers of the oceans were a natural, undiscovered species....Exciting, edge of your seat stuff. Highly recommended.

"I really like 'Surface'."

I think it's getting worse. Can't stand the big moron who's on the run with the babe. And Miles ... aargh. That kids needs a big slap and a sneeze to get rid of the awful nasal noise he keeps making. It's only his hot sister and the hottie trying to hit on him that saves the day

Threshold is surprisingly getting better, it's sad if it gets canned after first season. They got a new hottie and the alien angle is getting interesting with the we-are-here-to-help surprise.

Invasion, oh yes the blonde doc mmmmm ... oh the story is good too...

But none of these beat Galactica!
