Nothing wrong with a sense of humor. But what part of Mars Attack did you like most? Pierce Bronson's head transplanted on to that small dog, or grandma's favorite yodelling record helping to explode all those Martian brains in their space suit.

If we all had the same kind of humor, this world would indeed be a different place. But you 've got to admit compared to the comedy of yesteryear, there ain't none with THAT movie.

You can enjoy that one for me, with my blessing. hraccts

As to the movie listed as Them, I did enjoy that 50's movie, with those giant ants and all. For the time it was made, being shown now, it is campy but fun.

But I've always had the question when someone said that could not be because their muscles could not lift that mass they would have to carry. Why could not their entire frame and makeup be enlarged as well as their mass. It only makes sense to me.

I think to qualify for this award the film must take itself seriously. MarsAttacks doesn't count.
My votes for lamest Sci-Fi movie are, in no particular order:

Space Raiders
Explorers - horible ending
My Science Project
Mission to Mars
Red Planet
Soldier
Alien Reserection
The Core
Any "Made for Sci-Fi channel" movie
I'll second mission to Mars as truly horrible. Bad acting, bad SFX, bad sound effects, bad cliche posessed plot, very bad science....

Jon

Whether we become a multi-planet species with unlimited horizons, or are forever confined to Earth will be decided in the twenty-first century amid the vast plains, rugged canyons and lofty mountains of Mars Arthur Clarke

Jack Nicholson as president was great. Or what about the messed up greeting ceremony with the semi-functional translator? And the film had Natalie Portman in it so it can't be all bad....

wvbraun,
You make me laugh, in a good way, about your defense of that movie. Yea, Jack N. when he said, as President, and talking about all of congress being killed in an attack, (if I am correct), "Two out of three survived, and that ain't bad." Now his delivery of that line was funny.

Sound track? See "sound effects". I thought the track was appalling and disjointed from the events on the film.

Jon

Whether we become a multi-planet species with unlimited horizons, or are forever confined to Earth will be decided in the twenty-first century amid the vast plains, rugged canyons and lofty mountains of Mars Arthur Clarke

Seen as an undergrad....one of the worst movies ever. The cat calls from the group I was with exceeded anything on Mystery Science Theatre...

Not at all. It was nothing like your usual blockbuster soundtrack, meaning it was less bombastic and less loud than is usual for such films but it was still good.

My wife liked it, (Waterworld). She has it on book tapes, and she even bought it from Blockbuster for $10. Then some time later one of the sat. channels were running a deleted sceens included version, and she had me record it, even though she never likes other movies I do for her, (of course, they are for private use only).

But that is a good movie on several levels though I've found, one, you can count the inconsistensies in one sitting, flaws in another, and so on. You definitely have to put you brain in suspend mode to enjoy it though.

Excuse me? You liked Waterworld? One of the lamest movies ever? And you didn't like Mars Attacks? Makes sense...

I think Armaggedon has to have the most unrealistic space scenes in a 'modern blockbuster' film........

I love the way the shuttles dodge their way through the asteroids!!

As for the scenes where the space vehicle goes jumpin' across the rockscape........it would be more realistic for use as a car advert!!

I don't see how you can mention these movies in the same breath. Space Cowboys and Armageddon pretended to be somewhat 'realistic' space movies (needless to say they failed miserably) but Mars Attacks is a parody, it has nothing in common with the other two! Again, I thought it was brilliant but it was probably misunderstood by a lot of people.

"Don't run, we are your friends!"

wvbraun,
I did NOT say that Waterworld was one of the world's best movies of all time. But that my WIFE liked it alot, and therefore I have had to watch it a few times, with my brain in neutral of course. But if you watch it to see all of the inconsistensies there are, you can really make a game of it.

But my wife and I DO agree on one thing, Mars Attack was a complete waste of time and money to see. Keep up the good work, you're doing a great job defending the indefensible.

There are some movies that are good to watch if you do not engage your brain, but let it coast with the action. One of my favorites of this nature is the volcano movie with Pierce B. and Linda Hamilton, not the other one with Tommy Lee Jones. That was nice, but to drive a truck through hot lava and still make it is a reach of the imagination to my mind. But I am more use to hurricanes then volcanos though.

What I liked most of all about "Them" was
when the G.Is' finally arrived, and the scientists were debating how to deal with the nest, and an "ENFORCER" armed "crusty old Sarge", Chopped himself down a big ol' ant, cigar in his mouth, then simply jumped down in the hole, hosing .45 panaceas about.

I jumped with joy !.

avaunt,
I like the way you think and describe how to view old movies like Them. That's what makes those movies so fun to watch.

Another fun one to not think about just entered my mind, (the sign"For Rent, Cheap" goes up tomorrow in my mind). That was the movie Attack of the 50 foot woman who went and looked for her man even though he was playing on her. One of the ending lines was, "Well, she finally got her man." They were both electrocuted, I think.

For the time, I think part of the qualification for most sci-fi movies was lameness. Or how about this one I remember as a kid, its title was, I think, "The Tingler", or somesuch horror name. It was about a person who thought if he made a deaf person who could not talk screem, something evil would come out of her, and it did. That something was like a caterpiller who was trying to get back into a body, I think. But it has still made me think about it in life.

yeah that was a Disney movie if I recall correctly. kind of lame. I did own the action figures of the cartoonish floating robots, I enjoyed those

The only laws of matter are those which our minds must fabricate, and the only laws of mind are fabricated for it by matter.
--- James Clerk Maxwell
