Or the potential thereof. I thought I saw a thread started about this. Maybe I was wrong.

I have some questions.

1. Has this ever happened before?

2. Is this an attempt to get a "better deal" because the STS program is scheduled for termination in 3 years?

3. Are wages and benefits so bad that it's worth striking on the hope that a fickle Congress would fund the needed concessions by USA?

This seems very strange to me. I don't want to turn this into a debate on Unions, but the timing seems suspect to me considering our obligations to the completion of the ISS and the remaining number or Orbiter missions.

Perhaps more largely speaking, what does this mean for our Manned Space Program? Will it be held hostage to future threats of work outages due to Labor vs. Management issues?

That could be detrimental to our Manned Space Program in the eyes of the taxpayer and Congress, I should think.

"2012.. 1. Delta workers did
2. doubtful
3. Congress has no direct impact on workers wages. Congress has an impact whether the workers have a job but not how much they get paid

This is no real big deal

> What publicly funded mass transportation system doesn't go on strike from time to time?/i>

I will agree that this may be a non-issue, but STS (and especially at this point in time) is fundamentally different than other transportation systems. STS has a hard shutdown date (Sep 30, 2010) and a lot to do before it completes its primary mission for this decade -- namely completing ISS, and there are no alternative means to complete this mission.

I don't understand it either, I mean surely the workers know that NASA is broke

NASA's funding determines whether the workers have jobs or not. NASA does not deal directly with a contractor's workers. The worker's pay determine by USA's profit margin
