http://worldjumpday.org/

And if it does, what damage would it do? To me it seems kinda ridiculous but also kinda possible. But I also wonder how many people who register will actually do it. And their getting people worldwide so they may just counteract eachother. Anyway, I'm just curious to see if were actually in trouble or not.

This is a complete hoax. It would amount to nothing, the originator of this idea knows it won't work and is doing it as an art project in global collective action or some such thing.

The most obvious problem is with conservation of momentum: you jump up and push the Earth away, fall back to the ground and it falls back to you - everything is back in the same place it was when you started. Basically the net effect is that everyone would convert some of their muscle energy that they liberated in jumping into heat when they land back on the ground. Just for the heck of it, we can estimate the total amount of energy that would be released: take a billion people with mass ~75kg and let them jump half a meter into the air. That liberates 1E9*75*9.8*0.5 = a few trillion joules of energy, or about a million kilowatt-hours. Which is about a 1000 tons of tnt but distributed over the whole earth, in other words it's a pittance (for reference, individual nuclear bombs are measured in megatons of tnt).

It wouldn't work for the reasons already mentioned but even if it could, you would have to concentrate the mass of people into the area where the jump would be most effective. How will one be able to organize and get all peoples of the world to meet in one area?

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. Those who make it happen, those who watch it happen...and those who do not know what happened.

Maybe if everyone jumped it wouldn't alter our orbit, but could cause massive earthquakes... Maybe... and if EVERYONE...

...NAH

The earth weighs 5,972,000,000,000,000,000,000 metric tons (or thereabouts)... All 6 billion people jumping at the same time in the same location would have no effect. Each person would be responsible for moving just under 1,000,000,000,000 metric tons each (give or take a zero, im in a hurry). Math is probably wrong, but you get my point. Complete rubbish.

"If something's hard to do, then it's not worth doing." - Homer Simpson

This is equivalent to a person jumping on top of a tower measuring 1 kilometre x 1 kilometre, standing 127 kilometres high, made out of solid iron all the way through.

The Earth is heavy and humans are small...

----------------------------------

My minds have many opinions

That website seems to think that there are 586,408,353 registered 'jumpers'. This would be roughly 50% of all internet uses.

Which, really, is not exactly correct.

Wasn't the premise of this plan first concieved as a Futurama episode? Lots of robots farting in the same direction?

But what if there are evil jumpers on the "wrong" side of Earth?

This is pure, complete, total nonsense. It's like the greatest April Fool's joke ever. But it might be good fun to see if anyone actually jump.

----------------------------------

My minds have many opinions

I jump all the time,, just to watch the Earths orbit changs a little then I jump again to change it back!

It does not require many words to speak the truth. Chief Joseph
