There used to be a tourist trap in the Blue Ridge mountains, you could view a strange light that appeared far away, moved slowly downward then disappeared. Only at night and for extra money you could look through a telescope. The guy who debunked it found that the scope's objective was stopped down just to the point where it was incapable of resolving two auto headlights at that distance.
