I need help finding the name of a short story I read years ago. In the future, it always rains and the sun only comes out once in a while...so it is shocking to the people to see the sun. Also, another book I read was about a world where the sun always was in the sky, but when it was eclipsed, the people went mad and the world had to be rebuilt all over again. Thanks for any help!

In the book of life, the answers aren't in the back.
Charlie Brown

I don't know about the first one, but the second one is called "Nightfall".

Avoid the movies at all costs! Maybe someday, someone will make a movie based on "Nightfall" and do it right.

Amazing, crazyeddie! I used the link in your post, which took me to a Wikipedia summary of the story. It is absolutely the one I remember. I had forgotten how they locked the girl in the closet. It's a very good story. Thank you so much!

In the book of life, the answers aren't in the back.
Charlie Brown

Hi, junkheap! Also looked up "Nightfall" on Wikipedia and read the summary there. That is also exactly the book I remember reading. Thanks so much!

In the book of life, the answers aren't in the back.
Charlie Brown

Anyone ever read Bradbury's "The Pedestrian"? It's from his anthology "The Golden Apples of the Sun" (1953). Excellent and one of several of his works required in my freshmen Literature class.

Another goodie in that collection was "The Fog Horn", or as you may know it "The Beast From 20.000 Fathoms". Bradbury renamed it after the films producers mangled the plot. An homage to it was done in the Pokemon episode "Mystery at the Lighthouse".

Our teacher gave us a helluva year with works by Bradbury. Poe, Asimov and (GASP!) Harlan Ellison.

One of my favorite teachers in High School was a prior WWII fighter pilot who happened to be the Sci-Fi Lit and Mythology teacher. I had him for Sci-fi one quarter and Mythology another. This was the kind of guy that taught class in a suit every single day. No matter how hot. He was hugely passionate about teaching and I loved every minute of his classes. He was a fiery "In Your Face" Sci-Fi Lit teacher who could be heard pounding away on his podium halfway down the hall. Sadly he passed away several years ago. But, he gave me a deeper understanding of science fiction as literature and introduced me to Bullfinch's which I'll always be thankful for.
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

I had a 11th grade math teacher of that kind. He was a retired full bird col. who first saw action in the pacific theater. His stories about fighting the Jap's, and such tales I still remember.

I also found out about mythology from Jr. High,(I'm really dating myself), when I was introduced to Bullfinch's masterpiece. That really helped out in High school when we had a section of class on that subject. I really aced that part of the class. 'That really started my love for the subject I think then, and I have since looked into Norse mythology, and others. I found a used one at a used bookstore sometime back, and bought just old times sake.
