i have just seen a feature on a BBC news program tonight, which covered possible future involvement by the UK in an upcoming NASA Moon mission.

Included in the news feature was a very brief video clip of Selene's HDTV video of Earth Rise!

It was the first time i have ever seen the clip in such high quality. It was breath taking on the large screen! I have a HDTV but i cannot recieve HD channels as yet. I can only imagine just how stunning these pictures would have looked at full resolution. On regular TV it blew me away!

If you are a UK resident, or you can maybe recieve BBC News 24 for the duration of the evening/night it may be worth trying to catch it and seeing the feature and clip.

"Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy! Thank you very much Hiro2002. Wonder if they will release a large image? Anyway
I have downloaded that one. I assume it is a HDTV image?

Now that Kaguya / Selene is in primary mission phase, I hope we get to see very regular updates.

Shows the Taurus - Littrow Valley very well, coming off the Mare Serenitatis.

Hi alokmohan, thanks for pointing that out. Guess what, I had not noticed, that I've gone up
again. Was on Solar System for a loooooong time, though I like solar systems.

Which cluster I wonder?? M45, yes I like the Pleiades, they'll do .

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. Hi bobblebob, that one is one of my favourites from this mission to date.

That is a most incredible image.

The Earth appears upside down to us Northern Hemisphere residents, as the
Earth is literally about to 'set' below the Leibnitz Mountains close to the Moon's
South Pole.

Must try to find out which mountain that is, below the Earth.

You will like this one too. The Earth about to disappear behind the Lunar Limb.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. Hi bobblebob.

Yes, I am sure Anthmartian has linked to the movie.

Hi all,

Just found a large image of the view including the Apollo 17 Taurus - Littrow landing site, with
Mare Serenitatis on the left.

My blowup of the Taurus - Littrow Valley taken by SELENE. Assume with the
HDTV.

Was not that difficult to find in the end.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. Hi alokmohan,

I want to help you out here.

What are you confused about?

I have linked to the official JAXA image showing Mare Serenitatis (Sea of Serenity) to the left,
the Montes Taurus (Taurus Mountains) to the right, with the Taurus - Littrow Valley
approx two thirds on the way down on the boundary

The largish crater to the north is Littrow, 30 KM across.

The second link, is my own crop from the original JAXA image, where I had cropped, enlarged
& sharpened the Taurus - Littrow Valley

As you know, Apollo 17 landed in this valley, in December 1972 & thus remains
the final spot that humans have visited over the last 35 years.

There is a very good chance that SELENE will provide useful follow up studies, in fact
I would expect that to be the case

I hope that helps?

 Happy Christmas everyone.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. It is great to see the actual location in it's context. Too bad that the resolution does not allow seeing the actual hardware.

It seems really hard to image the landers, that provided the giant leap to mankind. We can see our spacecraft on the ground on Mars from orbit, but the same does not seem to be possible on the moon.

Hi APHH,

Not for much longer.

When the Lunar Reconnaisance Orbiter arrives late next year, the LROC (Lunar
Reconnaisance Orbiter Camera) will be able to have an average resolution of
50 CM & down to 30 CM in selected locations.

The LROC is a virtual twin of the HiRISE aboard the Mars Reconaissance Orbiter, that
has imaged both Viking landers, Mars Pathfinder & the MERs.

LROC will be able to image ALL Apollo landers, ALL Surveyor landers & Russian landers.
Not to metion the craters made by the Rangers & deorbited Pre Apollo Lunar Orbiters.

If SELENE's orbit is lowered, than much of this will be possible with the HDTV & Terrain Camera.

This I suppose has never been considered a priority.

 Happy Christmas everyone.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. Thanks for the info,

I know it's not scientifically important to photograph the landers, besides observing the long term impact on manmade objects on the moon.

However, philosophically this has value. The images of the abandoned Apollo bases on the moon should arrive just in time to fuel the inspiration of the people, when we once again need to make the challenging leap back to the surface of the moon.

This time perhaps to stay there and increase the economic sphere of humans.

Once they take pics of the landers, might shut those people up who say we didnt land on the moon

* Once they take pics of the landers, might shut those
* people up who say we didnt land on the moon

I can hardly wait. I was almost sure that either Kagya or Chang'e could already do it, but right now it doesn't appear so.

Kaguya / SELENE could in a lower orbit, but Chang'e 1 definately not. The imager has
insufficient resolution, as Chang'e 1 is doing global 3D lunar mapping.

The Lunar Reconnaisance Orbiter can without question. The only thing is, that the woo woos
will just say the LRO images are fake.

Unfortunately they will always find an answer to circumvent what is plainly the truth.

 Happy Boxing Day everyone.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. Thanks Andrew, I pop in from time to time to see what you guys are up to. Your discussion of LROC really grabbed my attention. I can't wait to see the Apollo sites.

Very well presented, for people who arent lunar geologists. Its still very first shots of data beamed back and just scratching the surface ( no pun intended ) of the capablities of KAYUGA.
