Hi robotical, The Apollo landing sites will be imaged. The resolution is of the order of 8 metres per pixel, so probably not quite sharp enough to pick out the Apollo hardware, unless under a low Sun & shadows might be seeable. The upcoming Lunar Reconassaince Orbiter, will be able to though. The woo woos unfortunately will just say, "those images are faked" so unfortunately, those of us who know better are in a no win situation, no matter what. I've quite ordering WOW's and moved on to HOLY S***'s Some of these are definitely getting printed out on our wide format printer and framed. These pics bring to mind the words that are IMO are the best used to describe this indescribable scene; Suddenly, from behind the rim of the moon, in long, slow motion moments of immense majesty, there emerges a sparkling blue and white jewel, a light delicate sky-blue sphere laced with slowly swirling veils of white, rising gradually like a small pearl in a thick sea of black mystery. I agree 100% docm. It is just absolutely incredible. I hope that these images will be printed on posters, in books, magazines etc. The Selene / Kaguya website has to be monitored regularly. I absolutely love what Anthmartian has done too. His image panels & images are excellent & I take great joy in downloading them & adding them to my growing collection. This is turning into one of the best threads on SDC IMO. Of course even the Apollo astronauts would not have see quite these views, as they orbited fairly close to the lunar equator, so seeing our home world rise & set over the Moon's poles is something very special indeed. A first. A spectacular & very special first. Very well done Japan & the Japanese people. I certainly thank you very much, & know that I will not be stepping out of line to express that on behalf of every one who has contributed to this thread. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) have successfully performed the world's first high-definition image taking of an Earth-rise* by the lunar explorer "KAGUYA" (SELENE,) which was injected into a lunar orbit at an altitude of about 100 km on October 18, 2007 (Japan Standard Time. Following times and dates are all JST.) The Apollo project was the first mission to take images of Earth rising over the Moon. The KAGUYA successfully shot high-definition images of the Earth-rise showing an impressive image of the blue Earth which was the only floating object in pitch-dark space. These are the world's first high-definition earth images taken from about 380,000 km away from the earth in space. Motion pictures shown on Web are low resolution. Still images shown on Web is high resolution, but they don't move. Last night, I watched special TV program about high-definition motion pictures taken by KAGUYA. They were more more beautiful and impressive than images shown on Web !!!!! I think NHK should distribute the high-definition motion pictures by DVD without fee.

I am not sure they should produce and give away DVD's for free. That would be quite costly for them. These days most people have broadband high speed internet connections, and also PC's capable of burning DVD's. It would be nice if JAXA made high res files, or ISO images and hosted them on their site for download. Ready for burning on to DVD once downloaded from the web. I have managed to download the low res movies which have been released so far. They are not HDTV of course. But, they are VCD resolution. I will be experimenting later by burning them to VCD and watching on my TV. Offtopic but, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent In short, its a new way of distributing large data over the internet. ( Not really new anymore, been around for quite a few years ) It works best if there are large number of users downloading the same thing at the same time. For example, i am getting my Linux distribution DVDs using it, and sharing my personal videos in high-quality format sometimes.

Thank you Andrew. <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" /> I am working on a very hastily put together Kaguya/Selene video. featuring pretty much everything released so far. I hope to be finished at the weekend. I will make the finished film available to all on line. I have sort of designed it to link together with future video's made from the mission as it unfolds a sort of part 1 if you like. It is great to start this and be there at the start of a mission to see it right through to the end, hopefully ending up with an epic record of the whole exploration by Selene at the Moon. The hasty nature means it will not have Brellis's superb music score yet, but hopefully we can put that right later on. I will experiment with Bit Torrent, but i also have another system for distributing video on my web site. Which is "Pando" You can google it and find out more. It is a private and secure person 2 person file share app. Anybody who want video from me will need that. The Selene video will feature animated 2d HDTV Images, as well as the released movies for play on a big TV screen. I have seen the movies this morning on my LCD TV they look great, even if thay are not the full res HDTV videos. If you want a copy, please let me know if you feel VCD, or a full DVD track would be of interest. I can upload as a ISO image ready for burning on to disc which will be straight forward and will get it in to your DVD player fastest. Early tests show the HDTV animated still images are looking unbelievable on the large TV screen too. Edit : I am grateful i just got pm'ed regarding checking out JAXA's image use policy. I am going to look into things and see if JAXA's policy is simular to that of NASA. In other words as long as the venture is non profit you are free to use NASA images. Don't settle for the image to your left -- go to Space.com immediately and drink in the beautiful high-definition images we're getting back from the Japanese Kaguya craft that's been orbiting the Moon for about a month now. Just a ridiculously pretty little planet hanging up there, and a ridiculously pretty image that'll be hanging on a million dorm-room walls by and by. I saw this yesterday and got my hopes sky high. Unfortunately, being able to view it depends on where you live in the world, Canada in this case. Looks like if you live outside Canada you are out of luck. This is quite common with TV channel websites. Thank you very much astrowikizhang. That is an amazing update. The south polar region of the moon at such resolution, with the sunlight at a very oblique angle, centred on a location, only 30 KM / 19 miles from the actual Lunar South Pole (89 degrees South). really, really nice. Thank you astrowikizhang. This is an extremely exciting, and well thought out mission. Applying some fantastic technology. Which really delivers maximum visual impact too. I would think this kind of data and mapping will be of huge help for simulators and such like when it come to training astronauts. let alone the other scientific goals being met. I can remember thinking the Clementine results looked fantastic, now to see them compared directly in this update you really see how much extra we are going to learn and be able to explore. The Moon was i guess for some starting to become a bit like our oceans or sea bed. Something so close, but not explored as much as you would believe with the new techniques and technology we have at our disposal today. I totally agree with you Anthmartian. Selene / Kaguya is going to give us all a completely 'New Moon' & judging by the performance thus far, we will learn more about the moon in general than throughout the previous missions combined including Apollo in many respects too (as they got detailed information on the regions close to the equator). Thje pre Apollo Lunar Orbiters, still IMO, rank among the greats regarding lunar orbital science & photography, Clementine also, delivered much, but Selene / Kaguya, is going to top the lot, for really what is a small sum of money, but with huge knowledge & dedication from the country & people of Japan. They have given the WHOLE WORLD, something, very, very special here & reflects a huge investment in the future of our species (like the MERs, MRO, etc, Selene ranks alongside). I know I have said it before, but will say again, Thank you very much to the people & country of Japan, for this marvellous mission & for updating us regularly on your excellent website (I am very impressed by the standard of English BTW). Selene will compliment the upcoming Lunar Reconnaisance Orbiter very well, another superb upcoming mission. The Moon, rightly is getting more, focussed attention now. That is quite sad. It will not stop the circulation of these HDTV files on the web though. it will just remove JAXA, and other parties involved from the distribution process. It will also remove control over quality. I have already heard talk of DivX and Xvid HDTV files of the Moon movies doing the rounds online. They will be freely available to anybody who wants them very shortly i suspect. I will not be using them in any of my projects, as i do not seek to breach copyright on any video i produce. I am in a minority i know, just check out many other peoples Youtube projects music scores and tracks. SDC members provide the musical material for the tracks i use. There is a huge culture and well established means for sharing such files on the web, where there is a demand there is a person putting it online for others, illegal or not. I did suspect JAXA had been paid by a TV channel ( Discovery ) , or maybe IMAX or something, and therefore would not be releasing the full res versions. If we are to be kept from seeing them for the duration of however long it takes to gather enough footage for a documentary, then we could have a very long wait on our hands. Anyway, it is a splendid mission. I have been wowed so far. This will not spoil things for me too much. It is a tribute to JAXA i guess that i am so eager to see these videos. Hi Anthmartian, I agree with you 100% that is a right bloody shame really. <img src="/images/icons/frown.gif" /> Like yourself though, this will not spoil the mission for me either. I hope an IMAX DVD will be released (still waiting for the excellent Roving Mars by Jim Bell to be released in the UK on DVD). However a long wait I'm afraid is guaranteed for the Kaguya / Selene HDTV movies to be released in full resolution. Thank you to no_way, for informing us of this, so we now know, not to wait for it to become available. I just checked the Selene site for any new updates, but the latest is still that brilliant one found by astrowikizhang, of the Terrain Camera, high resolution shots of the Moon's antarctic. Still, despite the issues, JAXA have provided an excellent website, with very frequent updates with high quality images & text in very good English. So I am not complaining, would just like to see the HDTV shots & movies in full resolution. A nice Earthrise movie here.
