"Both computers banks running in operational mode with 2 lanes, have been running since yesterday afternoon"

The 2 that have hard failed, was that due to some kind of spike, but the switches didnt protect them correctly?

Or they just may have failed a while back and it wasn't known.
Depends on the design.

If it was a system that supplied no power to the PS unless it was needed, they may have been dead for a while. Power supplies that have electrolytic capacitors in them don't like not being powered up for a longgggg time.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. BTW, it's Tektronix.

That was the best job I ever had.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Which is why, as you suggested, the standard method is to use a high resistance connection to limit the current, and give it plenty of time to fully discharge.

Edited for clarity

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Yeah and I suspect "switches" is not the correct word, hopefully we'll find out more later. Perhaps an assembly consisting of a switch and surge supressor?

But the Krell forgot one thing John. They have to be really careful now, since they don't know yet what caused the original problem, and the protective devices are now bypassed. If "it" happens again more important stuff could be fried.

...

Today specialists from Mission Control - Russia switched four of six stopped computers to work in test mode, others two computers would be switched in test mode later. Later russian members of the ISS crew will join in testing of the computers (Feodor Urchihin and Oleg Kotov) ...
Because of the computer failure - the working schedule of the russian members has shifted, so wake up time for them would be in 16:00 (MoscowTime) and they will be working evening and night ...
If it becomes that problems are in the "system block", it had to be waited until arrival of "Progress M61" for spare computers, otherwise if the problem is not with the computers - other repairment activities would considered ...
Well this thread has reached 590 posts so will soon exceed the 600 post limit.
I have opened Part III- I'd suggest we move the discussion there.

If a mod sees this, please sticky this thread for just a few days fter locking, since the last 3 pages or so contain a pretty detailed record of the ISS power anomoly.

Thanx,

Wayne

But the Krell forgot one thing John. No that was 2 hard failures of the backup power supplies.
Which may or may not be correct anyway.

But the Krell forgot one thing John.
