From NASA site:

Non scribblenote version of MSB.

"Station Program Manager Gives Update on Status of Navigation Computers

International Space Station Program Manager Mike Suffredini said Russian and U.S. flight controllers and engineers are focusing on efforts for recovering the computers and options to maintain attitude control until the problem is resolved.

Suffredini briefed reporters during the early afternoon about the status of troubleshooting efforts.

“I think we’re in good shape,†Suffredini said. “We still have a lot of options to go through to recover these machines. We’ve got a talented group of people to look at attitude control.†

The navigation computers provide backup attitude control and orbital altitude adjustments. For now, the station’s control moment gyroscopes are handling attitude control, with the shuttle’s propulsion system providing backup.
----------------------------------

MW :: And Upcoming events (actually now in process)

Spacewalkers Repairing Shuttle, Installing Station Vent

Image above: John (Danny) Olivas is repairing the thermal blanket on Atlantis. Image credit: NASA TV

STS-117 Mission Specialists Jim Reilly and Danny Olivas started STS-117’s third spacewalk at 1:24 p.m. EDT. Three major tasks are planned for the excursion, including repair work on Space Shuttle Atlantis.

The duo is tackling separate jobs to start the spacewalk. Olivas is focusing on the repair of a thermal blanket that is out of position on space shuttle Atlantis. Working from the end of the Atlantis’ robot arm, he will tuck the blanket back into place and then use a medical stapler to secure it to adjacent blankets on the left orbital maneuvering system pod.

Meanwhile, Reilly’s first task is the installation of a hydrogen vent on the International Space Station’s Destiny Laboratory. The vent is for a new oxygen generation s

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Monsters. Just something I ran across from here

Stability of Large Direct-Current Power Systems That Use Switching Converters and the Application of Switching Converters to the International Space Station
As direct-current space power systems continue to grow in size, switching power converters are playing an ever larger role in power conditioning and control. When a large direct-current system that uses power converters of this type is being designed, special attention must be placed on the electrical stability of the system and of the individual loads on the system. In the design of the electric power system of the International Space Station (ISS), NASA and its contractor team led by the Boeing Defense & Space Group placed a great deal of emphasis on designing for system and load stability. To achieve this goal, the team expended considerable effort deriving a clear concept on defining system stability in both a general sense and specifically with respect to the space station.

The ISS power system presents numerous challenges with respect to system stability--such as high power, complex sources, and undefined loads. These were further complicated by source and load components being designed in parallel by three major subcontractors (the Boeing Company, Rocketdyne Division/Rockwell International, and McDonnell Douglas Corporation) with interfaces to both sources and loads being designed in different countries (Russia, Japan, Canada, Europe, and others). These issues, coupled with the program goal of limiting costs, have proven to be a significant challenge to the project.

As a result, the program derived an impedance specification approach for system stability. This approach is based on the significant relationship between source and load impedances and the effect of this relationship on system stability. The impedance specification approach is limited i

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Monsters. Someone else will have to attempt scribblenotes if the next MSB occurs near 10 PM EDT.
I will be at the NJAA BAr-B-Q, entertaning the visitors with satellite obs (including the ISS/STS), constellations, etc.

If there is a replay later, I will do it then.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Switching Converters, ah yes. Back in my ham radio days, the rule was to avoid these at all costs if you want clean power. I had an old fashion "linear" power supply (aka as "boat anchor") that probably weighed 30 lbs, to power a 100 watt radio. You want really clean power for HF radio because the signals you are listening for are so far down in the noise.

You would have thought in the early days of ISS planning there would be some agreed decision on fundamental things like power specs. But looking at the videos of the inspection hatch they opened, with all the loose wires snaking around, there ain't no building codes in space as yet.

And the converters have probably improved since then.
However considering the design lead times for ISS, they may date from that period.

You think power conversion is ugly, you should try standards conversion for TV, from NTSC to PAL, or analog to digital and vice versa.
Now that's ugly

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Possible isolation of bad switch on service module?

Maybe problem is fixed, or at least understood???

But the Krell forgot one thing John. They were able to bring up 2 out of 3 lanes in both computers. They bypasses some switches in the power supplies (if im reading right) and they were able to come up. They shut them back down and are closing them up, and will restart them in self-test mode, and run them overnight to collect more data.

Could it have been the switch that was fried by a transient related to the new solar array installation? In other words, the switch did its job of protecting the computers?

Vote Libertarian

Is the bypassing of this switch just a short term fix or can they run the computers in this configuration long term?

Thanks to everybody for the excellent commentary/discussion surrounding the Ruskie 'puter problems. From the last few posts it sounds like they might have a better grasp as to the errant component/s. Hopefully they will be able to work quickly back from that point to find the root cause which created said errant component/s.

Am I right in saying they still haven't ruled out noisy power entirely? Also, as a novice question, do they have the scope mentioned way back installed in-line and/or are they able to obtain data from this in real-time and perhaps 'witness' some kind of spike/anomoly if/when the 'puters next crash?

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

It is a hand held digital scopemeter. Lcd screen with serial port, most likely Tectronix. Handy little deal for remote locations. Thier 4 CH digital storage scopes are now about the size of two cartons of smokes.

They've gotten the arrays fully retracted (minus an inch). they are doing final checks before the final closure and locking, it sounds like, although im not sure if it's left in this state, or if ground does the final closure.
