I'm tuned in for the briefing now

we are now over our 500 post limit I think, time to start part III soon
this has been a special mission until now, more then a "building on experience" mission

They guys in the news briefing always do their best to try and play down problems, and are doing with this issue, saying they fully expect to fix it and wont lose the ISS etc.

Wonder how they really feel off camera

I was just thinking that. I told my hubby that either the problem really isn't that major and ABC News was exaggerating it, or NASA is really trying to make it sounds like it's not that much of a problem and it really is. I would love to know their conversations outside of these briefings....

If you want to know for one person, read erioladastra's posts

"or NASA is really trying to make it sounds like it's not that much of a problem and it really is. Rybanis - I wonder how the crew is feeling right now. Are they seriously stressed out at this point?

Well, US visitors are going to have to use the Russian's head for awhile. They can't dump <cough /> the US side waste. Let's hope the Russians have some room left in theirs... If not, that would be stressful.
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

Man, lotsa scribbles.

OK MW scribblenotes (tm )

Mikw Suffredini (In just know that's spelled wrong, I'll correct it later) ISS Program manager.

Looked at Power Quality, which is fine

Then disconnected new (demated connectors) power to Russia segment, Attempted computer restart not sucessful.

Control and Command ran for 3 hours (sort of), then was powered down for overnight (Russian time) troubleshooting.
Next attempt tomorrow AM.

It appears the SECONDARY power supplies on one or two of the 6 computers is a hard failure. No spares on board.

Looking at options (MW- a common theme)
Alternatives to desensitize power suppllies (it seems the secondary supplies are the most sensitive?) (MW, capacitors? )

Standard procedure with problem is to create
Fault Trees -- />Analysis--> fault analyis-- what ever is left is problem
(MW- The Sherlock Holmes System)

In this case, these processes are running in parallel to save time, if it's easy to eliminate a source of potential problem before examining likelyhood, then just do it and cross off the list.

Looking closely at most time coincident event after which problems started, which was connecting a cable that runs through the 3/4 truss.

If time is available on EVA, may disconnect (to eliminate it as source of problem) before tomorrows reboot attempt.

Two teams running in parallel.
/>> Anomoly recover team

/>> What if we can't get the computers restarted team, addressing

Priority 1: Maintaining attitude control at shuttle departure.
ideas??
The biggest relate event is the shuttle undock.
...Possibly doing undocking under CMG control (never been needed, so never thought much about before)
... Using the progress or Soyuz thrusters on ground control

P2: (MW-because it's in very goo

But the Krell forgot one thing John.
In reply to:

...hard failure. So spares on board.

Just checking that is not a typo. So spares on board or No spares on board?

MSB Questions

...ABC News
Can you leave crew there without pooters? What are flight rules?

A: Attitude control is most important
From crew perspective, No Big Deal, but from a system perspective it is important.
Looking at attitude options.

Mike Schneider AP Q: Once shuttle leaves, how long can you last?

Once shuttle leaves and CMG's are back in control, no real problem

Pat Peterson, FL Today Q: Spare parts on board?

"CREW IS NOT AT RISK"

Regarding computers, we are even working at alternate means to supply 5V power to the computers. We have many 5V supplies on the station.

MW (interesting. Can you imagine soldering in microgravity )

Next step is to isolate computers from environment, isolating from US segment, up to and including un mounting them from frame to eliminate potential grounding problems.

Bill Harwood CSB Q: A lay question I'm hearing. IS this the end of the ISS?
A:I am not at the point of even thinking at that, we are working problems in order of priority. That's way out there.
"No one thinks the vehicle will be lost"

"No plans to deman the station"

In any case, we can command from ground, plenty of creative solutions available and to come.

Irene ? Reuters Q:
A: Can soyuz dock without computer control?

Yes Russians are good at it.

Q: Eliminated LAN as problem source?
Pretty much, built to spec, should not be able to cause a problem.

Bill ?Q: Are CMG's needed for debris avoidance maneuvers.

So far, yes, but we are looking at other options.

It is the biggest concern without full capability.

Such maneuvers are very rare in the history of program, and almost all are precautionary.

MS, AP Q:

Ammo to critics of ISS?

Not really, this is life in space

Gina, ABC News Q:

Ever think t

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Finally NASA TV schedule.

New schedule "k" about to be downloaded (Shuttle Page)

Now adding in the afternoon, ~ 3PM EDT MSB.

One tonight at (9 PM CDT)

6:43 PM CDT Saturday Crew interview.

sigh...that's all folks

MW

These and all posts edited for speeling, and 1 or two minor changes for clarity. Oh , that's not all.

A personal hypothesis (not a theory)

What if there was a big static spike when the S 3/4 connector was mated.

Power could look fine now, but big spike could have damaged power supplies????

But the Krell forgot one thing John. If they had spares would have used them, NO

Not necessarily. If a module fails and you have one spare, the last thing you want to do is swap in the spare without knowing if the cause of the failure was external and still present.
