I know I'm a little behind, but I just watched the Kibo opening video and wanted to pass on a few cultural notes.

The little blue and white curtain they hung outside Kibo's door is a noren, and not surprisingly, the hiragani written on it spels out Kibo (actually it spells kibou). Noren are usually hung outside common resturants like ramen and soba and yakinikku shops, and bars. This is especially true if they want to look rustic or old fashioned. They are also hung over the entrance to public baths.

The "Welcome" signe the Japanese astronaut held up immediatly upon entering said, "Irashaimase." Whenever you walk into a Japanese store, this is what the shopkeepers shout out to welcome you to their business.

So I have to ask, which is Kibo, a bar or a bath?

Brian J.
