Although I read back issues of NewScientist as they slowly get to me up here (usually four months late), this poll seems silly to me.

It seems all to recent, has few votes, and probably many of those voting have not read or seen a large enough pool of films or books. Where is Blade Runner for instance?

Yeah not that many votes in the whole thing. Plenty missing but still interesting to see how a "NewScientist poll" differs from the normal of having StarWars at the top of everything.
"All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. I normally visit the newscientist website, but where was this poll taken? The number votes was very low which probably means that it was well hidden.

Did the poll just have battlestar Galactica as an option, because I doubt may people would have voted much for the original series.

IMHO Firefly was far too short-lived to be considered among the greatest sci-fi shows.

Only 3 of the Worldwide top 10 were books. Not sure who they polled, but I don't think there is a movie or tv show that would compete in my top 100 best of scifi.

This is similar to when my local Alternative newspaper runs a "best music of the last 25 year" poll. More not-terribly-good choices appear than not, because everyone with an axe to grind votes for their (recent) favorite people, trying to get them into the poll.

Example: in then last poll they did, "Oasis" appeared in the top hundred all-time Punk/New Wave/Alternative classics. In a field that contains everyone from Blondie, the B-52's, to The Lemondrops and the Replacements, through Dave Matthew's and others too numerous to mention, those lamers get a rating?

Puhhleeze....

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

I like the "Google" poll. Take a look at the thread with 33K hits on it - Battle Star Galactica...
That was the worst list I ever seen! The voters can't possible represent sci-fi fans. Where's Contact, Matrix, Blade Runner, Terminator or ET? Good to see that 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' still is in the game, started my sci-fi interest. A far better list is this from imdb: http://www.imdb.com/chart/scifi.

Firefly, sorry, haven't seen that on. Serenity, good movie but I wouldn't list it. Same with farescape. Watched Hitchhiker for ten minutes before I turned it of.

Firefly is kind of an anomaly. It just came off of having a movie run. I think it's too fresh. It's a good show, but damn, I don't think any of those movies are better than, say, the best books out there. What, is Ender's Game supposed to be the best sci-fi book in the world? Kind of a weird comparison.

Good comments above. It's refreshing to know that science fiction buffs are self-thinkers aren't so easily taken in by these manipulated polls and surveys.

These polls are controlled by aliens who have invaded Earth and are walking among us disguised as marketing and publicity gurus whose goal is....
