Just heard on german radio that the ESA issued a statement concerning Hans Schlegel: There were some parameters causing concern yesterday, but todays examinations showed him to be in perfect health. He will take part in the second space walk.

Crew members are exercising and everybody seems to be getting ready for the day.

Hans seems to be active and talking with his hands. bobblebob
"If that report is true, why cant he take part in EVA 1 tomorrow?

I guess that decision was made yesterday when there were concerns about his health and all preparations have already been made for ummm... who exactly? to do the spacewalk instead of Schlegel.

Edit: Couldn't find any trace of the statement on the ESA page, but two things in the Columbus Blog: (1):"NASA astronaut Stanley Love will take ESA astronaut Hans Schlegel’s place on the EVA." Which answers my own question and (2): "The extra day has been added to allow the crew to prepare for the changes." So in all probability another extra day or at least some time (considering nitrogen purge and everything) would be needed to change back to Schlegel for EVA one.

In reply to:

to do the spacewalk instead of Schlegel.

There is a backup astronaut, but it seems like Schlegel is doing well. I bet he will do it. He's preparing for it today.

edit: They just verified on NASATV that Love will do the EVA. :{
To bad, I was hoping that Schlegel would do it. I was thinking of Apollo 9 with Schweickart getting sick but got well after a day.

"SCE to AUX" - John Aaron, curiosity pays off

"Again? Another day delay?

The EVA was meant to happen today (Sunday) but will be happening Monday instead. Only 1 24hr delay. Today they are transfering stuff between the ISS and the shuttle, and also doing the focus inspections of the OMS pod. So im guessing there will be no long term impact to the delayed EVA?

Also the extra day added to the mission has been granted

shuttle_guy
"Dr. Stan Love

Thanks, I already found out. again. Had slipped my mind for some reason.

I wonder if it's a bad practice to keep editing my posts...

Too bad Nasa TV does not carry station Audio any more like it did for some time Yesterday. I'd really like to hear what they're talking about up there.

And yes, I realize that the campout to purge oxygen will not have started yet if the spacewalk is on monday. I'm still pretty sure, though that Love will do the first EVA. Well, at least I haven't heard anything to the contrary.

Well, at least I haven't heard anything to the contrary.

Yeah NTV confirmed Love will do it. I was just hoping for Hans.

NASA shuttle webpage had this up:

In reply to:

The first STS-122 spacewalk is planned for Monday morning at 9:35 a.m. EST. Mission specialists Rex Walheim and Stanley Love will help attach the Columbus science laboratory to the starboard side of the Harmony Node. Station robotic arm operators will assist the spacewalkers. Love and Walheim will “camp-out” in the U.S. airlock to purge nitrogen from their bodies prior to Monday’s spacewalk.
Love replaces Mission Specialist Hans Schlegel after the spacewalk was delayed one day. The mission has also been extended a day with a landing planned for the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Focused inspections of the shuttle’s thermal protection system are scheduled to begin at 2:15 p.m. today. Mission managers want to take a closer look at a small tear in the thermal blanket on the right Orbital Maneuvering System pod.

Shuttle and station crew members will also ready the Harmony Node for the attachment of Columbus and continue cargo transfers.

"SCE to AUX" - John Aaron, curiosity pays off

I've just come back & saw the Atlantis/ISS pair pass right over about an hour ago.

I had the camera point straight up & hopefully I caught the pair pass Mars & Elnath / Beta Tauri,
turn red & pass into the Earth's shadow.

Tomorrow I will do the same again (weather looks as though its co-operating).

Thanks for the tip off MeteorWayne. I've tuned in.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. Wont bother with the mission status briefing. The media just ask questions that are best suited for the MMT briefing
