With the calls for private medical consultation would not rule it out. No clue as to how I would react.

"Are the pictures of the payload bay from the station arm camera? "

Yes, during docking you were seeing the starboard and port cameras and the tip lee of the SSRMS providing nice views of the payload bay.

Haven't had a chance to come on before now, but just wanted to express my congratulations to SG, erioladastra, etc, for a fantastic launch and mission so far. Sounds like the recent 'tradition' of having an off-nominal event is continuing.

Desperately bad luck for Hans to be rotated out of EVA1. I will be very interested to hear what the problem was/is, and no doubt this will come to light in one of the briefings.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

Sounds like John almost said that, while of course refusing to give any detail since it is a private issue.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Given that Hans is a little on the older side (56) could it have been a heart attack? The launch stresses might have brought it on.

I wonder how well the crew would be prepared to handle a heart attack. That aside has Hans appeared on NASA TV since docking? How is he looking? Are there any signs of any crew member looking ill?

Regards Peter

Wow. Older than me (and that ain't easy)
I'm sure Hans is in much better shape than I, though.

Well, we'll find out when we find out.
And not a minute before.

But the Krell forgot one thing John.
In reply to:

That aside has Hans appeared on NASA TV since docking? He was certainly moving about on the other side of the hatch, wasn't grimacing, or holding a sick-bag up to the face!

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

That was a rather contentious briefing, though I did like the "stop fishing" comment.

I can't imagine throw-up in space. Yikes, gives new meaning to the phrase "blowing chunks"

                            www.watchnasatv.com

                          ONE PERCENT FOR NASA!

Just watching footage of the docking and introductions, briefings etc. Hans looks ok but doesn't appear to be interacting a lot with the crew.

Most peculiar.

cheers Peter
I have been out for a few hours this afternoon, since post Atlantis / ISS docking.

Have I missed something? Is Hans ill?

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. Is Love trained to the same level as Hans is on the spacewalk? Im guessing he would be in the event he is needed

Hi bobblebob, glad you saw Atlantis / ISS. From Ashford, we had an excellent view,
with the docked pair passing almost overhead, very bright, then turned dull red &
disappeared into the Earth's shadow. Also visible tomorrow & the next
few days (weather permitting).

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. "Well, we'll find out when we find out. "

Id be surprised if we ever find out the reason. The health of anyone is no ones business except between them and the doctor. I didnt see the conference but i can bet the press were fishing for information that they have no right to know
I just read a Focus News Agency article which stated the following

"Houston. German astronaut Hans Schlegel, one of the seven-strong crew of the Atlantis space shuttle, is unwell and will not join their first spacewalk delayed for 24 hours, a NASA official said Saturday.
Mission chief John Shannon told reporters that Schlegel was unwell, without giving details, and had been excused from the spacewalk. He will be replaced by American astronaut Stanley Love on the spacewalk which has been delayed until Monday,"

I do not know whether this is accurate reporting or not. The press briefing didn't state who was sick and just listening to NASA TV now they are not stating who is sick.

cheers Peter

"Is Love trained to the same level as Hans is on the spacewalk? Im guessing he would be in the event he is needed "

No, he did the robotics work so he is familiar with the tasks. But he is ready for EVA and will study hard in the next 24 hours.

In reply to:

The health of anyone is no ones business except between them and the doctor.

This is an interesting 'question'. I have mixed feelings about whether we are 'entitled' to know. I guess the fairly unrestricted access we, as the general public, have during every Mission does make this incident stand out more readily. I can see no pressing reason why it would not be made public, save for the tradition of medical consults being confidential, or it perhaps being an embarassing problem.

Of course, it may well be that Hans lets the cat out of the bag himself during one of press events from orbit, or when they return. I would be interested to know if those expected to be asking questions during on-orbit events will be counselled not to broach the subject with Hans, should he be a participant. As I say, should it be a relatively simple problem he's had, he may have no problem with letting the rest of us in on it.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

Damn, all this cloak and dagger stuff leaves everyone speculating (mostly incorrectly I guess) what's wrong Hans. I suppose it must be worse than a cold then.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Wanna see this site looking like the old SDC uplink?

Go here to see how: SDC Eye saver
