Yes, the head of the German Space Agency DLR was just on. Of course DLR are a major player with the Columbus Science Module. There were apparently three minor foam losses, all very minor & all well past the point of danger. This was a wonderfully clean launch. The manifest of shuttle flights appears to stand in light of today's successful launch. Endeavour still slated for STS 123 in March, with Japan's KIBO Science module. Discovery still slated for STS 124 in April. Atlantis is still scheduled for STS 125 Hubble Space Telescope upgrade / servicing mission in August with Endeavour for STS 400 if needed for rescue. I think NAZA is due to his accent. Well he should be extremely grateful to NASA. Without NASA, DLR will not be able to do all of what it has been able to do. After all, Atlantis is delivering one of their major projects into space to the ISS. He should be also grateful to Russia too, launching ESA hardware also. What he said is so true. I thought the "flames" were particles of the little bit of atmosphere hitting the vehicle. That was my first thought too. I think, though, that by the time the engines shut down it should be high enough that there isn't that much air. I'm no expert though. A later thought was maybe unburned exhaust from the APUs hitting the main engine flames. It seemed like a halo effect. Very pretty. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> </div>

I assume that the Shuttle Cargo Bay is not pressurised?? Just keep mentioning on NASA TV that the Columbus Science Module will be exposed to the space environment for the first time when they have opened. Does this suggest otherwise?? Confirmation of Payload Bay Doors have successfully opened. Will be great to see video of the Columbus Module in the cargo bay. No problems with the freon cooling hoses etc. Atlantis approaching the UK, Ireland & Western Europe. Maybe they mean the sunlight hitting it? You're right about the cargo bay venting to the outside, it depressurizes on the way up and repressurizes on the way down. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> </div>

That was what my query was. Commentary seemed to suggest that it was pressurised, but maybe my condition affects how I analyse what is being said. <img src="/images/icons/crazy.gif" /> I did think the Payload Bay was not pressurised. Ok now im annoyed. Just put Sky News on and thier Breaking News ticker says "Nasa officials say at least 3 pieces of foam came off Atlantis during liftoff. Firstly, it didnt come off Atlantis it came off the ET. Secondly this is normal and less than usual!!! Its still scrolling along now like its some massive news

KU Band antenna is working perfectly. Does look like that SKY is blowing this out of ALL proportion. Yes three TINY peices of foam did come off the ET, but were so small & well above the point of being dangerous. SKY is just sensationalising. This has been a most incredible launch, Atlantis & her crew are safe & are doing just fine. Atlantis passing over Madagascar & out over the Indian Ocean. "SKY is just sensationalising" True, but ive been particularly annoyed recently with the UK media. Ive heard every day for the past 2 weeks about Britney. Im sure they will report tomorrow what she had for breakfast. But not once do they report on a shuttle being launched with a European module inside.

It's not just Sky that's sensationalising about the foam that fell off. They just mentioned it on BBC TV News as well.
