I'm afraid it IS really getting that bad Thor06.

Dreadful & so needless, particularly as there are so many channels available,
but most are just showing crap & endless repeats of mindless crap.

There is not a lot for people with an IQ in excess of 70 or an attenton span of greater than
that of a five year old IMO.

Atlantis over Newfoundland, Canada.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. The high speed animation of the OBSS inspection was pretty cool. They said the download of the launch video from flight deck coming up next. Don't know if that will show on TV as it downloads. Engineering camera launch replays coming up at 7:30 (must be central time).

They'll get it soon Astros stopped the tape to rewind it some and do it again. MUX (multiplexer) down...

shuttle_guy - what role do you have on the launch team? Are you in charge of specific part of the shuttle leading up to launch?

shuttle_guy,

I almost laughed out loud at your remark

"Some FOD at the pad that looked like a dog tag." Having spent time in the Air Force, I know that FOD stands for 'Foreign Object Damage', which usually applied to engines sucking up small pieces of hardware from the ramp or taxiway. The term 'FOD' came be applied to anything which had the potential of being inhaled by an engine. So, a nut lying on the ramp wasn't a 'nut', it was 'FOD'.
The secret to peace of mind is a short attention span.

3488,

If you were a network executive, would you continue to run a story which has little interest to the general public, or one that huge numbers of people find riveting? The sad truth is that the average person believes that off planet exploration has no impact on their lives, so they will switch off once the neat pictures of the rocket climbing into the sky end. It doesn't help that most viewers are completely ignorant of the principles of rocketry, so they are mystified by what commentary they hear. And an incredible number of people have no idea where the shuttle is going, as they equate 'space' with other planets and galaxies far, far away. These people cannot relate with the experience at all, the concept of zero gravity, the idea of traveling several miles per second, these things mean as much to them as quantum mechanics or particle physics. They believe that one has to be a genius who has several college degrees to fathom what it is all about.

Brittney they can understand.
The secret to peace of mind is a short attention span.

Just mention the launch for 10 seconds thats all i want. Just tell people thats its at least gone up rather than not saying anything. I know infortunately people are more interested in Britney but that doesnt mean they shouldnt just mention a shuttle launch however brief.

They reported the Russian computers failing on the ISS, and im not sure how many people who even know what they were, let alone care. But why report good news, thats not what our lovely media likes to do

Absolutely.

17 minute combined briefing. No issues at all (but it's early in the flight)

No indications at all of any concern at all about the TPS (take that BBC, and SKY/Fox) so docking occurrs tomorrow morning US time, afternoon UT.

In fact, no concerns about any problems at all. John commented that he's never walked into the room and seen a blank issue board.

Hail Atlantis.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. I believe they did say that the crew was warned, and all evidence indicated they had a touchy transducer.
Since everything else said this one sensor was an outlier, it would be prudent to warn them, and from what I recall John said, they did.
I think he indicated that it was tripped, but perhaps they had disabled the Klaxon by then, since everything else said all was OK.

This is all just my recollection of what was said.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. yeah thats what i heard too.

Quite ironic really. BBC/Sky/Fox report on a nonstory (re foam) yet a potential problem with the launch they just ignore. Seems it was just a false alarm tho

Hello - I am new (its nice to see so many disgruntled fellow UK residents complaining about the lacklustre British media coverage... I would note its rare for the BBC or Sky to send anyone to cover the missions at all, at least the BBC did this time. I've also seen examples on Sky in the past where they've been describing an impending launch which has already been scrubbed, and so on... Hopefully no-one with a genuine interest in the shuttle/space station follows it on TV...)

About the cabin pressure sensor:

I'm not so sure they were warned - because a little while after ascent the capcom told the crew "and we have a story for you about the DPDT when you're ready" - they responded they'd hear it later, though I never heard what it was.. (are there any circumstances in which the PAO would censor the capcom communications - the only one I can recall is where one of the ISS expedition crew was sounding a bit fed up with mission control, and they seemed to conveniently go to a videofile.)

Can someone clarify - does DPDT refer to a specific cabin pressure sensor, or does it mean "double-pull double-throw switch" - and what actually *is* the latter in the context of the shuttle?

I'm wondering if the reason they weren't warned is that there was too much else going on. I'm also a bit disappointed none of the journalists thought to ask about it yesterday.

Ditto on the congrats.

This launch seems to be the only good news in the news these last couple of days. I'm glad its finally up.

"SCE to AUX" - John Aaron, curiosity pays off
