The view from inside the ISS is almost always from the laboratory which seems filled with stuff. There is constant background noise from the machines.

Not very convenient place.

So the question is; is there a room in ISS just for lounging and having a break where the astronauts can escape the unconvenient lab and noise for a while and have a cup of coffee and just marvel the earth and the accomplishment of having a lab up there?

A little bar with the music from the Star Wars cantina playing in the background would be nice.

The Unity node would be my guess, its not too crowded or at least didn't used to be, but it doesn't have windows IIRC. There would of course, be no room dedicated to lounging because space inside ISS is at such a premium.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. Those who make it happen, those who watch it happen...and those who do not know what happened.

That's what I thought.

But I think it would be good to have a little bar or cafeteria with as little constant background noise as possible and preferably with a window and a large video display with broadband. To check one's stock portfolio and markets and various normal stuff.

A place to have a genuine break and then continue working.

IIRC the first Hab version, (NOT inflatable), structure was completed, and is being used as a training facility, but there is no way to get it up.

. . . and while that won't be as spacious as Hab would've been, it will have one hell of a good view. ;-) It was indefinitely postponed, but once upon a time I remember shuttle_guy talking about how it had been completed and delivered to NASA, so it could be flown after "core complete" is acheived.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

That's disappointing to hear. Hopefully it could be recommissioned. It'd be a shame to have it rot on the ground.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Each crew member (that gets a berth) has a small insulated room with window. Crew respect each other's berths as personal space. It's their own piece of blue heaven. There is also a "tent" that crew can install in Node or Lab, but I don't remember it's acronym. Both the Russian modules have multi-use central areas, but the kitchen/table space is very limited.

http://www.space.com/news/spacestation/zvezda_life_000705.html

The closest thing to a real lounge that has been proposed recently is the British dual-minimodules. The one module would be a shielded 6-crew dorm and the other a large galley/wardroom. These modules offer a lot of function but the question is where's the money? The Brits are notoriously stingy on space spending.

http://www.space.com/businesstechnology/080116-tw-british-iss.html

Crew berth:

http://www.scienceclarified.com/scitech/images/lsss_0001_0001_0_img0017.jpg

Service Module table:

http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/station/crew/exp7/luletters/lu_letter3.html

drinking tea with chopsticks on ISS (priceless):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7obLT4s2-HA

Josh

We need a first generation of pioneers.

It appears the Cupola was mainly intended as an observation area for watching Earth and sort a command post for Roboarms, EVA'ers and incoming vehicles.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Wanna see this site looking like the old SDC uplink?

Go here to see how: SDC Eye saver
