thanks for posting this rlb2. can't wait for MRO to give these areas a good look

Such a setting would
thrill any armchair Mars explorer.

well, this armchair exlporer is twirling in his galactic chair!

I gotta run back through this and the earlier threads where the expert voices of SDC have weighed in on the caves. Great topic, and fabulous work. One that is very close to my heart, and has been a huge hobby of mine for a while.

Working on the images from the rovers and other Mars missions is a hugely rewarding pass time. It's not just enjoyable of course it's also educational. It's also not that hard to do providing you have the correct software.

Somebody on another space forum once said to me, "how boring, don't you get fed up with looking at rocks day after day, thousands of times over?"

Well, the answer is no! 3 years later, i am far from bored. In fact i visit the rover site many times a day viewing raw images.

If any other fellow Mars colour image enthusiasts are reading, isn't it the most annoying thing in the world when they upload one image from a 3 image colour set that is absolutely stunning! I guess if you're like me and you curse at NASA for teasing you, then you are a Mars nut like me too! *LOL*

This is a image i recently coloured ( yes i am British, we spell "color" funny. )

It is from the Spirit rovers recent exploration of the area around "Home Plate"

I'm just beginning to get together some Mars Rover colour images on my Home Pages. Plus a load of other stuff, such as time lapse videos from the mission, other solar system targets, other exploration missions are featured too.

http://anthmartian.googlepages.com/thisislandearth

"Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy! Hi Anthmartian & rlb2.

Are those collapsed pits on the flanks of the Ascreaus Mons volcano (collapsing lava tubes), reported recently??

Thanks for posting it rlb2.

I am hoping that your image will be approved soon Anthmartian. Like you, I too do not get bored looking at the MER images.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. Thanks rlb2.

I think it's good we can see these views together here in one place. It allows us to take in the whole big picture of just where the Rovers are operating now.

Differing images really allow us to see the details in the landscapes fully.

My updated "Spirit" pages can be found below, including higher res views of the images i have posted here.

http://anthmartian.googlepages.com/spiritrover

"Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy! rlb2 - That’s how I read it too. Years ago I had the opportunity to explore the ape
caves (lava tubes) with my son on the south side of Mt Saint Helens. I wonder if
they are any mounds there that they can compare them too.

Your answer confirms what I had suspected too. I bet the ape caves at Mt St Helens were interesting. If ever I am that way, I will go & visit them & Mt St Helens itself.

I have visited various lava tubes in the Canary Islands, particularly on the Pico del Teide on Tenerife, Jameos del Agua on Lanzarote & several examples on the Canary Island of El Hierro, near La Restinga (where there are several small volcanoes & a large lava field).

Seeing similar things on Mars is such detail is amazing. Of course we have the Hadley Rille on the Moon, visited by Apollo 15, also a collapsed lava tube??

rlb2 & Anthmartian, as I said on the New Horizons Jupiter encounter thread, perhaps you could both publish a book / DVD or CD ROM with your images!!!

Please keep them coming!!

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. Andrew,

A DVD could be possible. I have had a bit of experiance with animating still images etc, and have the software to put it all together.

We're talking about a lot of content to make it worth while though. I would be happy to begin collecting images and work done here by anybody who wishes it for inclusion on a DVD video. I am able to view these pictures on my 28" wide screen LCD TV, via media center on my X-Box. They do look amazing, it adds another dimension to them to see them looking huge.

maybe a annual disc would be good?

I have made a few Mars Rover DVD video discs, with plenty of menu's, slide shows, and video content too. Panorama's look great animated, so do very high res pictures, zoomed in and kind of flown over by an imaginary camera.

Whatever is done, i think it would be cool to work on various aspects of it as a group here.

P.S, Andrew, have been to Timanfiya national park on lanzarote too, a few times. That place is amazing. i always think of it when i see volcanic lava fields on Mars, and lava boulders strewn across a plain. Visiting places like that on Earth, definately allow you to understand what you're seeing on space imagery.

"Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy! Hi Anthmartian

Welcome to SDC. Your pics and website are tres cool

have been to Timanfiya national park on lanzarote too, a few times. That place is amazing.

Lanzarote is an incredible place. I did a concert in one of the lava tubes at the Visual Music Festival -- what an experience!!

I love the idea of collaborating for a DVD, and I would love to provide some music to accompany. I do soundtracks for movies/tv for a living.

I created a myspace page where I uploaded a piano piece and a video thing. I started doing a rhythm-track to one of the Mars Rover vids -- which reminds me, I should finish that piece...

I'm a recovering optimist - things could be better.

Thanks brellis.

The concert sounds like it would have been an awesome experiance. Your music sounded really amazing too.

If this DVD got off the ground am sure a sound track by yourself would be a outstanding addition to it.

Obviously the guys posting their own enhanced images here and in other topics would be welcome to send me content for a DVD, or give me permission to download and store them from here. As would anybody else who wished to contribute.

I guess as this would be an opportunity to get some amazing images on the big screen we should invite anybody to put forward their favourite space images from recent months or throughout the year from whatever source.

We are talking about 4.7GB of DVD video. So, there is no need to hold back on content. I would be happy to put this together, but would welcome any input from any members here.

among the things needed for the DVD title would be....

music ( check! )

artwork ( cover, menu's, etc )

still images ( slide shows ) - Astro photography.

still images ( slide shows ) - space mission imagery enhanced by members.

still images ( slide shows ) - favourite astronomy / space images from the year.

Video content from space missions.

Video content - home made / or from official released sources online.

Should we have a topic for this? I am new so am not sure if it is valid or appropriate for these forums?

I would like to think we could get something up together throughout the year and release it as a Christmas present for all members. This would give us ample time to gather material, or to put projects together for inclusion.

it really could be anything appropriate that is featured on the disc. Summer star parties, your own astro images, presentations, favourite images, absolutely anything.

As for releasing the disc, bit torrent springs

"Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy! I made a panorama from 3 b&w raw images stitched together yesterday.

Images are from the Spirit Rover, taken on Sol 1159. Below is one segment of it. I cannot post the whole Pan on this forum, it would be tiny in order to comply with the image size allowed. The whole pan can be seen on my home pages.

http://anthmartian.googlepages.com/thisislandearth

"Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy! Hi there

The entire MER A Spirit Sol 1159 panorama by Anthmartian can be seen here.

Anthmartian has done a fantastic job.

http://anthmartian.googlepages.com/thisislandearth

Hi borman. RGB image sets have been all over the place on the MER home site the last couple of weeks.

They dangled some fantastic incomplete colour sets for both Spirit and Opportunity in front of us, but the complete RGB image sets needed to make a colour image never came through.

Here's an pretty interesting image from Opportunity though, taken on Sol 1136

This has been scaled down for these forums, the full res version can be seen here.

http://anthmartian.googlepages.com/thisislandearth

"Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy! I believe Andrew posted a B&W image of this feature. I've found it quite interesting. As soon as a good RGB set got released i coloured it.

As you can see the shadows are quite long. I had to lighten it too. There is a full res, no compressed version on my site.

http://anthmartian.googlepages.com/thisislandearth

"Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy!
