I felt sure one of the mid-deck guys would get a ride home on the flight-deck, especially with the rookies on this mission.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

Just a question about the Launch & Entry Suit for ISS crew members, specifically Suni in this case. Did her suit stay on orbit with her for this return flight, or did it come home on Discovery and get sent back up on this mission?

Similarly, does her Soyuz suit come home with her tomorrow, or do the Russians take that home on their next change-out?

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

im typing this before looking at the emergency landing list, making a couple of guesses, and then going back to look at the ELS, and comment.

im guessing Andrews AFB(they have 2 9900 ft runways), as well as o'hare, NAS Oceana, and maybe even Tinker AFB are all on there...

surprisingly, only Oceana? i figured if they really needed to, they COULD use KADW or KORD.

MW, im glad they cant use EWR....could you imagine the chaos corralling and redirecting all of those commercial pigs in the area? too much risk, i'd assume, even if its not a runway length issue.

(edit: Page last modified: 27-04-2005 22:06:53 Zulu )

Thats very true MeteorWayne.

Thanks dougbaker.

RAF Fairford has one of the longest runways in Britain. One emergency landing site I know of,
but not on your list is Kent Manston International Airport, near Ramsgate, Kent, UK.

It is only 25 miles from my home town of Ashford, Kent, UK.

It has the longest runway in Britain & is also one of the widest.

It used to be called RAF Manston, before being turned over by the RAF for more civilian use.

The only potential draw back is that it can often be very windy there. The land is very flat
& is close to the coast.

However this part of the UK is the driest & sunniest part overall.

The site in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, I know very well. It is next to the
Aeropuerto de Gando de Gran Canaria. You can't miss it if ever you fly to Gran Canaria.

The Spanish airforce often share civilian runways with airforce jets.

The Aeropuerto de Gando de Gran Canaria, is no exception. NASA AFAIK, helped
pay for the upgrade of the airport, in return for its use in case of the emergency landing
of the STS.

The locals there I know are quite proud of it.

Andrew Brown.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world. <<<
It has the longest runway in Britain
/>>>

It doesn't. The longest runway in the UK is actually at Heathrow - the northerly runway (09L/27R).

Assuming they dont get into KSC today, will they for sure land at EDW today (assuming good weather), even if both sites were to look good for tomorrow (ie, would they take the extra attempt(s) at KSC, or just do EDW today if they can)?

In this article on SDC they write:

"Following today's engine burn, Atlantis will have five landing opportunities tomorrow. The first will be at KSC at 2:18 p.m. EDT (1818 GMT). At around 3:50 p.m. EDT (1950 GMT) tomorrow, the shuttle could try again at KSC or try to land at Edwards.

If all these attempts fail, then the shuttle has two more chances at Edwards tomorrow: one at 5:24 p.m. (2124 GMT) and 6:59 p.m. EDT (2259 GMT)."

So if they abort for a landing at 3:50 p.m. EDT, you have plenty of time to drive to Edwards base

Just to review, there is a KSC landing oppotunity on orbit 218

Orbit 219 can go to either KSC (which is preferred if possible)
or Edwards.

Then there are Edwards opportunities on orbits 220 and 221.

But the Krell forgot one thing John.
